“A decent one-night stay”
Reviewed 13 September 2012

I stayed at the Empire Riverside Hotel last week for one night during a brief business visit to Hamburg.

The hotel is located in a very convenient location, next door to the, er...interesting, red light district and within walking distance (about 20 minutes) from Hamburg's centre and the HafenCity.

The lobby is clean and modern and check-in was quick and easy. My room was simple, clean and contemporary with a nice view over Hamburg's huge docks. Bed was very comfy. No iron and ironing board in the room (minimalist would be a fair description) but reception brought them up to me within about 15 minutes of my request.

No wifi in the rooms which is very surprising for what seems to be a business-driven hotel and really lets the place down a bit.

Staff were friendly and helpful in giving me walking directions to the city centre.

My highlight of the hotel was the bar on the 20th floor, where some business associates and I relaxed with a couple of cocktails at the end of the evening. The view over the docks/city is spectacular and they have a vast and interesting cocktail menu. The bar was bustling but we managed to get served right away for each round and the drinks were very good.

I can't comment on the value of the hotel as I believe all Hamburg's hotel prices were inflated when I travelled due to a trade show in the city.

All in all I liked this hotel but I think the lack of wifi in the rooms leaves the place at a real disadvantage, particularly as it's not a cheap place to stay.

The hotel is purely for short business stay - functional. The room is basic, with open closet, basic toiletries, small TV, characterless room decor, no wifi (only in reception) and minibar -1litre water bottle costs €5. Costs around €25 in taxi from airport. Not suitable for families. Staff are polite and courteous and helpful. Not sure I would pay €179 per night for such a basic facility.

I travel to Hamburg regularly and have stayed a few times at the Maritim Reichshof as well as regularly at a small family hotel near my office in Rellingen - but this time I was on a 3-week epic trip around the world so I fancied something a little more lively for my night in Hamburg.
I've visited 20up, the Empire Riverside's skybar a few times and it's nice - the harbour view is incredible and the drinks are good, if a little fruity (but this seems to be a German cocktail thing...) - but I've never actually managed to stay at the hotel until now. I was hoping for it to be good, and it was.
First - location. It's right in the middle of the Reeperbahn (Red Light) area, but it's got that weird continental red light district thing going on which, actually, means it's a great place to go out - there are tons of great bars and it's an extremely happening place, especially in the summer. Just avoid a couple of obvious streets if you don't want that kind of thing.
Second - the hotel itself. Very cool - big, tall, minimalist and hip. I love that the reception staff wear smart jackets and dark jeans. A nice touch.
Third - the room. Honestly, not all that, but far from bad. I guess it's just a little basic, but that's kind of the continental style sometimes (unless you go for old-style opulence, which I definitely don't). But a comfy bed (with almost normal pillows - a major plus and rare point in Germany), excellent bathroom and incredible harbour view with floor-ceiling windows. Extremely nice. No wi-fi in the room though, and no cable to connect to the ethernet. Annoying, but not the end of the world. Disclaimer: I did book a basic room, so more expensive ones may be a little more luxe...
Fourth - the value. Excellent - €99 plus €17 for overnight parking.

I like this hotel - going to sleep by the lights of the harbour and waking up to a view like that is worth it in itself. On top of that, this is the right place to be for a night in Hamburg.

Oh, and the Hard Rock Cafe is only across the street, which is always kind of fun...

Well located near the Reeperbahn station, this modern hotel has spectacular harbour and city views. The staff and very helpful and knowledgeable, providing assistance where needed. Breakfast of a high standard. The rooms are very comfortable and have all necessary amenities.

Room Tip: As high up as possible facing harbour.

Stayed here for one night. The hotel has a very nice view of the harbour and was within easy walking distance of the Reeperbahn district. It is a bit of a hike to public transport, but close to the harbour which can be a lovely walk. The staff were not overly friendly or welcoming, very businesslike and seemed a bit grim. The room itself was a great size and the bathroom was very nice and well laid out. Overall a clean hotel, but if I were to visit Hamburg again, I would stay closer to the downtown area.

Cool and elegant hotel worth 4 stars. Design and equipment of lobby, restaurant and room is “basic” in the positive sense (no unnecessary decorations) giving a smooth and somewhat sophisticated overall impression. Front desk service OK but a little uneven. Bar service can be arrogant.

Breakfast restaurant: Selection, quality and service is international top class. The main reason for our high rating.

Location near Landungsbrücke as an ideal base for harbour trips. However, be aware that the hotel is located in the periphery of Reeperbahn red light district. Just 100 m down Davidstrasse you may suddenly find yourself surrounded by pushy prostitutes.

Room Tip: When booking a room type “Deluxe harbour view” you may get only partial harbour view. Full harbour v...
