The location of the hotel is close to Hamburgs Musical Theaters, the DOM festival and the Landungsbruecken (Harbor). If you are looking for a place in St. Pauli to stay this hotel could be an option for you. We came from Sweden by car and needed to travel on to Amsterdam the next day. Hamburg was for us one last highlight on our vacation we where looking forward to. The hotel has a convenient car park which was great for us.
Apart from the convenient parking and the good location though, our experience with this hotel has been rather disappointing. Its not really clear for what kind of traveler this hotel is catering. It tries to be a trendy design hotel but the rooms just don't deliver on that. Furniture and fittings are cheap and not very well thought through in their usability. The hotel seems to aim at business traveler clientele but then doesn't have the kind of service and facilities that you would expect as a business traveler (No wifi in the room, no iron and ironing board, even the higher priced deluxe rooms don't have a proper desk and chair with table lamp to work on etc.).
The deluxe rooms are marketed as rooms with great views over the city and the harbor when in fact many of these rooms are located on lower floors where that is not the case. So if you book a deluxe room for the view, ask to be on one of the upper floors or take a lower priced standard room.
Another thing that disappointed me was the attitude of the staff and their willingness to listen and assist. Our first room smelled awful of cold cigarette smoke despite the fact that I asked specifically for a non smoking room. It took me a long time to convince the staff that this really isn't acceptable for me traveling with a small child.
All in all I felt the hotel did not really meet the expectations I had. There are definitely better options available in Hamburg at this price range. Its unlikely that I will stay at the Empire Riverside again.
