“Budget option right in the middle of the city”
Reviewed 12 July 2012

This is a perfectly adquate budget hotel for those who are out and about and exploring. The location is perfect if you want to see the Alster or the Harbor - it's only about a 15 minute walk from both. There is free garage parking included in the rate, but the garage is small and there might not be a space. Coffee and croissants are available in the morning. The rooms are small and basic, but clean. The floors are hard and the walls thin though. Half of the rooms face a main street and are noisy. The others facing the courtyard are better, but still avoid the ones next to the reception or elevator.
There is no reception at night. You need to enter a code at an automatic machine at the door to get in and get your room keys. It worked for us, but I don't know if there is any help if it didn't.

Room Tip: Rooms furthest away from the elevator, facing the courtyard, are quieter

We stayed at the Michaelis Hof Hotel for three nights. We picked the hotel because of its location.
It was a fairly cheap stay. Be advised that the reception is only manned between 7 am till noon. If you arrived outside these hours, as we did, you have to check in at an automat, where you type in your booking number and then get a key card from the machine. This key card also accesses the underground parking lot.
Also the hotel is one floor on top of a Catholic Community Center or something like that. But we never noticed anything from the lower floors.
However, we were unlucky the first night to get the probably worst room at the hotel (No. 943). No aircon, no fridge and the fact that the hotel recommended that we didn't open the windows due to small flies. So the first night's sleep was bad due to the heat.
The next morning, we made our complaint to the staff, and we were given the choice of two other rooms which both had aircon and mini-fridge.
In this case we'd like to recommend Daniela, who was very nice, helpful, understanding and a good laugh and at the same time fixed our problem with a smile. That's german service for you, thank you Daniela.
Breakfast is a croissant and a cup of tea or coffee served in the reception.
The hotel all in all is more of a hostel. Personally I prefer hotels where the reception is manned at all times.
Despite the earlier mentioned complaints the hotel is ok if you just want a place to sleep. The rooms were clean, and the staff is very friendly, helpful and polite. On the day of departure, you can use the parking lot that connects with the parking garage for free until you leave.
Our experience is that the rooms on the court side of the hotel are very quiet except for the church bells. Rooms towards the street are a bit noisy, but nothing that kept us from sleeping.
If you go, don't expect luxury, but a hotel that gives you place to sleep and rest a bit.

Room Tip: Make sure your room has aircon.

This is an automated hotel located on the top floor of the catholic center.- you enter thru the center's lobby and take an elevator up. Reception is only open from 7AM to noon but i had no problem checking myself in and getting my room and door card when i arrived late in the afternoon. I had nicely furnished decent sized room and bath for 69 euros. There is no breakfast but coffee and croissants are provided in the morning. The reception staff in the morning is friendly and helpful. The location is ideal for visiting Hamburg- 5 minutes walk to the Elbe and 10 minutes to Binnealster. An s bahn stop is about 100 feet from the entrance where you can take a train directly to the airport or main train station. There is a major street at the corner so if you are sleeping with the windows open you will probably want earplugs. If you are willing to forgo the traditional hotel experience i doubt you find a better value in central Hamburg.

Easy access by S Bahn from airport, transfer at main train station. A little tricky to find, have a good look at the picture they provide on their web site so you recognize the building. Lots of nice little restaurants, shops and pubs in the neighbourhood, feels safe for single females even after dark. Easy walking distance to sights (Speicherstadt, Michel). Definitely off the beaten tourist track. Croissants and coffee in the morning were both excellent. No wireless internet, but wired is available in rooms.
