My wife and I booked a 3 night stay at the Villa Kennedy on the tail end of a two week trip to Germany and France. We had booked a king room via a 3rd party website, and we had booked a courtyard view as recommended by many TA reviewers. Unfortunately the 3rd party website was falsely describing the room they were selling, and we were likely to instead get a plain room overlooking the street. We were quite disappointed but this was not Villa Kennedy's fault - we did write to them though, and they said they would do what they could, but there were no guarantees. As such there was a slight edge to our view of our upcoming stay there - we were not sure what to expect.
Our first impressions seemed to confirm our worries - our room wasn't ready, even though we arrived almost precisely after we said we would. We took our rental car back while they finished getting the room ready, and then come back hot, sweaty, and stressed (finding the Europcar drop-off at Hauptbahnhof is near impossible!). We were greeted by a very helpful person at reception, who checked us in straight away and took us to our room. To our surprise and delight we had been upgraded to a suite - and were greeted with a bottle of sparkling wine on arrival to our room! This totally turned our mood around and erased any previous stress and worry - what an amazing start to our stay there.
The following day (on my wife's birthday) the hotel then came to our room with a birthday cake for her, and a handwritten card! We were blown away - we hadn't requested anything other than to have the courtyard view. It was a truly wonderful gesture by the hotel and had us in incredibly good moods for our entire stay.
The room itself was looking a little tired (scratches on the wooden surfaces) and the wifi is incredibly expensive as others have mentioned, but they mentioned they are trying to implement free wi-fi, and I got the impression they will be renovating the rooms in the near future. But despite looking a little tired they are very luxurious - the bed is incredibly comfortable, and the view into the courtyard was very relaxing; it was very nice just having the windows open and letting a breeze in and listening to the water fountain in the courtyard. The only other small negative about the room was the air conditioning really was not very cold. It was not uncomfortable, but it would have been nice to take it down a notch further. It also seemed variable during the night.
The hotel itself is beautiful, as others have mentioned. The grounds and hotel are immaculately presented.
We actually ended up spending much of our trip dining at the hotel - the room service and restaurant are both excellent. The breakfast is not as high a quality as the other meals though, and the buffet is quite expensive and probably not worth it.
It was my wife's birthday while we were there, so I wrote to the concierge to ask for restaurant recommendations. They were incredibly prompt and helpful in their reply, and in the end we decided to book a table at the hotel restaurant. The food there was amazing, highly recommended. Our only disappointment came at the end of the meal - it seemed like we were forgotten for quite a while, we wanted to move outside and were told they would move us and our stuff, but then never came, even though we asked twice. However once we chased it up a second time, the person who was looking after drinks in the courtyard did an amazing job of looking after us.
The location of the hotel is good - we were able to walk to a main shopping precinct in about about 10 minutes, and it was lovely walking in the parks by the river. It is a short ride to the airport, and various other hot spots around Frankfurt.
The absolute best part of the hotel is the staff. They are prompt, courteous and warm, and will go out of their way to ensure that your needs are met and you have a pleasant stay. We were very impressed with how high a quality of service they offer.
We did end up having a few glitches checking out - a minibar charge for something we didn't have, and a few payment issues - but the way they handled those glitches was excellent. However, apparently there was a miscommunication between reception and the person collecting our bags from our room, and they were expecting us to be there (but we were at reception checking out). They mentioned this just as we were leaving - I don't think we did anything wrong, we just called the reception and said we would be checking out now and could someone please get our bags. But we got the impression they thought we had - I'm not sure what happened there.
But really, these small things barely made a dent on our stay. This is the first hotel I've stayed at since staying at the Tokyo Park Hyatt which has even come close to their service level - and I think Villa Kennedy surpassed it. If you want to go somewhere where you are properly looked after and have an incredibly comfortable stay, and for what I think are quite reasonable prices given the quality on offer, then Villa Kennedy is the place to go. I very much hope to go back one day!
