“Impressive collection”
Reviewed 1 August 2014

Spacious with lovely modern extension housing interesting post 1945 collection. The museum is well set out and entry at this time of year provides free entry to the sculpture museum nearby. Comprehensive old masters collection on top floor. The cafe on the ground level was open but I recommend the lovely cafe in the sculpture museum as an alternative - the selection of cakes there was seriously good and you could sit outside in a lovely courtyard.

“Masters”

The focus on Goethe and the lovely restaurant in the premises - Holbein- delightful! Masterpieces well displayed and without the general rush that one sees in the museums around the world. Plus the location that brings you right to the river where you can stroll along the Maine.

“Worth €12??”
Reviewed 27 July 2014

Spacious, bright, uncrowded. Only drawback was cost of entry €12, although I did receive free entry to the sculpture museum a short walk away. The Holbein Restaurant within the Staedel is quite good too.

“Outstanding collection”

Another great German museum not to be missed. The setting for the contemporary art collection in the basement is beautiful and should not be missed. Old Masters collection on the top floor includes works by Vermeer, Rembrandt,Tiepolo, Holbein, Durer, Grunewald and van Eyck. On the first floor you will find works from 1800-1945 with key works by the major Impressionists artists including Beckmann. Allow yourself at least half a day.

“Superb collection”
Reviewed 22 July 2014

This contains an excellent collection of European paintings from the 14th to the 21st century, with an emphasis on German and Netherlandish (both north and south) art from the 15th through the 17th century. There are also French, Italian, and Spanish works, and a smattering of paintings from the New World, among them a striking head of Goethe by Andy Warhol. There is also a very fine collection of photos from the 1840s to 1960. If you get a Frankfurt Card, available at the tourist office in the Hauptbahnhof, you`ll save half the entrance fee. (That card is a real bargain, since it gets you into most museums at half price, and you get to use the public transportation system without paying a cent more.)
