Owner description: Considered the city's finest art museum, the Städel holds a fantastic collection of works from the 14th century through the present day.

Good historical survey, some English labelling. Cafe very reasonable. Frankfurt Museum Card is probably best way; it's €18 for 2 consecutive days for all of Frankfurt's museums. Staedel is €12 single. Unlike Cologne this does not include public transport on first day. If you intend to do a couple of days museum visting I'd suggest the card and then Tageskarte for public transport.

The most important museum in frankfurt is the städel. The names of the artists that take part in the gallery speak for themselves, thus it's seriously worth the price of the ticket. Also, the maintenance is excellent.

Although I live in DC where I'm spoiled by the free museums, I feel this museum is well worth the entrance fee. The collection of work is priceless. I spent the whole day admiring work and I hope to go again. I don't want to spoil the experience by talking about specific pieces but if you're in Germany and you like to view art then you must visit this museum.

Spacious with lovely modern extension housing interesting post 1945 collection. The museum is well set out and entry at this time of year provides free entry to the sculpture museum nearby. Comprehensive old masters collection on top floor. The cafe on the ground level was open but I recommend the lovely cafe in the sculpture museum as an alternative - the selection of cakes there was seriously good and you could sit outside in a lovely courtyard.

The focus on Goethe and the lovely restaurant in the premises - Holbein- delightful! Masterpieces well displayed and without the general rush that one sees in the museums around the world. Plus the location that brings you right to the river where you can stroll along the Maine.
