“You get what you pay...”
Reviewed 1 September 2010

My name is Thomas S. I am from Heidelberg, Germany, but since 15 years I live in the beautiful City of Vienna, Austria. As Frankfurt was – and still is -my major
airport hub, I know the facilities there quite well.

I travel frequently to the Americas - especially to South America, i.e. Argentina. A couple of years ago Lufthansa offered direct (one stop) night flights to Buenos Aires, but nowadays the only option is a flight that leaves Frankfurt at 10.20 am. That means, if one does not spent the night before the flight in Frankfurt one would have to take the early morning flight from Vienna and this means getting up at 4 am and boarding the 14 hours long distance flight to Buenos Aires already with a jetlag.

Therefore I decided to take an evening flight the night before and could start my journey to Argentina relaxed and after a good nights rest.

I used a mixture of skymiles and cash and got a very good rate with breakfast included. As already mentioned many times before, the location of the Sheraton is ideal, just a short walk from terminal 1.

The whole personel was very friendly and service oriented: Check-in was quick and efficient, My check-in agent Carolin Zimmer was very charming. I asked for a room with views of the runways, as I like to see planes taking of and touching down and she really tried hard and finally got me a room with the desired location.

The room itself was nice and comfortable equipped with completely sound proof windows and a huge comfortable bed, flat screen TV, aircon, minibar, working desk and lounge chair. Ok, the bathroom was not the latest design, but clean and equipped with everything I needed. I guess the management is renovating and updating the Hotel frequently, but in an establishment with more than 1000 rooms renovation is a never ending story, once you finished with the last floor, you can start at the ground floor again.

The only thing I missed, was the pool, it has been closed which is a pity.

I slept very good as it was completely quiet. The breakfast buffet is excellent, with a wide variety and quality of food and beverages, the waiters very friendly (I even got an extra table for my newspaper). Travellers complaining about the poor choice must have stayed in another Hotel or restaurant. Well it is not cheap but also the price is not unusual for a five star Hotel, so if you can get a rate with breakfast included it would not be a bad idea.

Talking about money, I would like to make some comments on reviews below. Some travellers are talking about “overprized”, “ripoff” and more, I think this is not fair.
As the Hotel is located directly on the premises of the airport, the costs for real estate are massive, and it is more than natural hat the prices have to be higher than for a Hotel in the middle of nowhere. There are surely cheaper options, but you have to take shuttles, trains or taxis.

Life is full of choices, so choose carefully! For me, the Sheraton was the perfect choice.

Nice regards from Vienna

Thomas

Dear Mr. Schaefer,

Wow – what an awesome review! Many, many thanks for your kind words and detailed description of your stay at our hotel. I was speechless after reading your comments and wondered if you are maybe a former employee of our hotel. You seem to have so much insight into the many aspects of running a successful hotel. Especially your comments on the everlasting renovation process of a hotel of our size do mirror the reality exactly. It is refreshing to get so much appreciation for our hard work. Herzlichen Dank!

We hope you will soon have another stopover in Frankfurt and would be very happy to see you again before long.

I arrived Frankfurt very late one night (11pm) due to a flight cancellation in Hamburg which caused me to re-route through Frankfurt. I was on a flight the next morning at 7am.
I was appalled that the room rate quoted me was €200!!! For less than 12 hours in a hotel. When I expressed my surprise, I was told it's a world-class hotel. Hmmm. What was also quite incredible was that Reception demanded to know when I would be leaving my room in the morning. Not recalling my exact flight time, I just said "very early" - and she then said "I need to know what time you will be exiting the room." I suppose so that they can maximize their profit per hour. I went up to my room and found the most average room you could find in Europe. There was nothing special about this room - average size, average bed, no big bells and whistles. On top of that, of course there were extra charges for use of the internet.

In the morning, I was asked if all was okay. I did give feedback that all was fine except for the rate I was charged. When I was told again it's a world-class, five star hotel - I also mentioned that I'd actually stayed the night before in a Radisson Blu hotel in Hamburg and I could confirm that that was a world-class hotel and this one was not.

Had I paid €100 or even upwards of €150 for this room, I would not write this review. I can't say I write many reviews that are this negative - But at €200 for 7 hours in a room, I feel like this hotel took advantage... huge advantage.

Dear “right-o”,

Thank you very much for your feedback, which I gladly studied to find out what caused your disappointment.

I am sorry that you found the room rate too high compared with what you received. Please understand that last-minute room bookings are usually more expensive than reservations that are planned in advance. We cannot adjust the rates to the actual time that guests stay at our hotel. If the stay is for 10 or 24 hours, the room rate remains the same. The service quality is of course a different thing. I regret that our staff was not more accommodating and did not give you more useful information. I will talk to the front desk clerks and make them aware of the effect their questions and answers can have on our guests. Please accept my apology for the unpleasant memories we created.

We would be happy if you would stay at our hotel again soon. I am confident that your next stay will be far more pleasant than the last one.

Yours,

I've stayed at the Sheraton Frankfurt Airport several times, traveling alone for business in the Rhein-Main area and with the family in conjunction with long haul travel out of FRA, respectively. To start with the obvious: location, location, location: two escalators up from the high speed ICE train station, a breezeway over from Terminal 1 of FRA, and in equally convenient reach of the Terminal 2 shuttles and the local trains.

This is where the praise would usually end with most airport hotels.

However, the FRA Sheraton is much more: the rooms are absolutely quiet, well appointed, and functional. The family rooms are the best deal in the industry for functionality, space, and comfort with double vanity, separate shower, and shower bath tub.

Finally, I cannot but praise the Towers Lounge staff whose level of professional courtesy, attention, and warm welcoming attitude has made me feel at home and at ease not matter if I visited for a nightcap all by myself or with three young kids; getting the board games out of the cupboard and striking up a chat with the kids seems to come as easy to any of them as impeccable attention to detail in service and attending to the buffet, which is always well stocked with regional favorites and international tastes alike. "I'll be baack"

Dear Mr. Finke,

Thanks very much for your awesome review. I am happy that you feel at home at our hotel, even when you travel with your family. We love to have kids here – they really light up our business life. Your kind words on our Towers crew caused many smiles on the 9th floor… The Towers team asked me to thank you on their behalf.

We look forward to seeing you all soon again and hope that in the next school holidays you will travel again via Frankfurt.

Far too expensive for the room and service quality - was disappointing for a first experience at Sheraton hotels: the hotel is extremely well located between the two terminals (so no need at all to go outside or use any shuttle) but the standard rooms have nothing special but are rather small and not so luxurious (old fashioned bathrooms furthermore).
There was no breakfast served before 6:30AM, although at an international airport! Likewise for the room service: rather uninteresting and nonexistent out of "normal" dinner or lunch times.

To be noted: staff extremely polite and professional; my critics are based on a stay out of normal business or travel times (late arrival, early departure for overnight connection flights only so I may not have enjoyed it fully (bars, fitness rooms, etc.?) - note a nice German restaurant opened until quite a late hour in the hotel's building too)

Dear guest of our hotel,

Thank you for your evaluation of your hotel stay. Your expectations were not fully fulfilled and it disappoints me that you were not entirely satisfied.

Please note that we do indeed serve breakfast before 6.30 am. Starting at 3.30 am, we serve a small gratis breakfast at our lobby café for guests with a very early departure. Our room service is available 24 hours every day and the menu is tailored to the usual mealtimes, i.e. breakfast, day menu and night menu. Also our fitness center is open 24/7, so the next time you have an overnight stay at our hotel, please make use of our modern fitness facilities. Thanks for including in your review the positive observations you made during your stay.

We hope that next time you will stay a little longer to get a more comprehensive picture of our service offer.

I stayed here with my son on our way to the US, and chose a Classic room, because we simply did not need more for one night.
It was clean, modern, updated. Bathroom was spotless, beds were very comfortable.
We had to wait for check-in for a couple of minutes simply because there was a large group in front of us, but the staff was still very efficient and polite. Check out took just a minute or two. I really enjouyed the fact that it took us only 5 mins. back to check-in for our next flight. This hotel is absolutely the best choice if you want to be close to the airport.

The Sheraton hotel very nicely placed at the airport, which is great to stay at if you have an early morning flight. The staff was very friendly, especially the doorman, and the front desk staff. The concierge was very well versed in her job and was able to find out information on anything in Frankfurt and directions to get there. The lobby is nice and clean, spacious and modern, the rooms are not too bad, but the decor in the bathrooms is very 1980's, and the hotel hallways where the rooms are, are very dirty, stained carpets, trash in the hallway and smell of smoke and what smelled to be urine. The gym is nice, and very well appointed for a hotel, but the pool has been closed and is not going to be reopened. The main restauraunt is a touristic ripoff. the decor is fake german lodge in the middle of a modern highrise. there was another restauraunt there, but it was closed when I went to dine. I ordered a glass of wine while I perused the menu, and when it arrived I was appalled, there was maybe three sips in the bottom of a huge glass. I thought at first they wanted me to try it first like at a fine restauraunt, however that was all for the gossly overpriced italian wine. The glass was also conspicuouly missing the german value line on the glass, a violation of german law to ensure that you are not cheated. I ordered the currywurst and fries, and got a cold hot-dog (not a very good wurst that I am used to) and cold fries. They charged us for both water, where a bottle was close to 16 dollars, and bread for the table, 12 dollars. So for a cold hot dog and fries, a glass of wine, and bread and water, my meal was almost $50! It's a good thing I ordered the cheapest thing on the menu! Room was VERY expensive for what you got, and internet was $12 for one hour, or $25 for the day. The room was very well appointed, however, and very clean, in stark contrast the hallway I had to use to get to it. For the money paid, very dissappointed

Dear guest from Kansas City,

Thank you for staying at our hotel. Your review is not altogether positive and I regret that you were disappointed. Your description, however, does not mirror the actual situation in some points.

Please note that we serve red wine in a claret glass, which is larger than normal wine glasses. Maybe that made you think the glass was half-empty. The calibration mark is not on the glass but on the carafe in which the wine is served. Hot dogs are not on our menu and the sausage we serve as currywurst is the original German currywurst sausage and of the highest quality. I am sorry that your fries were cold. That should of course not happen and I will see to it that our restaurant staff pays more attention to such important details. My apologies for that. We do not serve complimentary tap water at our restaurants but only bottled water. Last but not least, somehow, you must have mixed up the food prices with another restaurant because the price for the bread basket, for instance, is only about 2.60 dollars.

I hope that sooner or later you will give us another chance and stop by again at our hotel. Maybe next time you will be more pleased with our services. We will surely do our best to make you happy.

Yours sincerely,

Sascha Konter

We selected this location as we arrived by plane and would be taking the ICE high-speed train the next morning. Very convenient location in that we just took rolled onto the shuttle, followed the pathways and went directly into the hotel lobby. We were taken right away due to having a Starwood Preferred Guest card. The other line was quite long. Yes the price was quite a bit higher than other airport hotels, but we enjoyed the convenience of being close to the terminal and the train station. The room was spacious with a desk for work. The washroom was large and clean. The hallways are very wide and roomy. Only stayed one night. The restaurants on site were pricey so we had breakfast in the cafe just outside the hotel entrance, near the train station. The train station is less than a 5 minute walk from the hotel lobby.

Dear le-metro,

I would like to thank you very much for publishing a short summary of your stay at our hotel. It is interesting that you point out the closeness of both airport and long-distance train station because many guests do not know that when they stay at our hotel, they can literally hop on their flights or trains just minutes after leaving the hotel. It makes me happy to see that you had a pleasant stay.
