I went in for a bit of a break from the cold and was pleasantly surprised. The collection is amazingly decadent though the museum itself is fairly small and split over two areas. Admission is also pretty cheap so it's worth a stop. Forewarning: not all signs and plaques are posted in English as well as German.

We didn't go inside, but this beautiful structure is quite imposing from the outside. It's located around the corner from the Romerberg area and about a block (walk straight) or two from the waterfront of the Rhein River. It's in an area that almost has an alley-like feel to it, so I'd be careful about walking there at night.

This museum displays church valuables, such as candle sticks and ceremonial garments, and illustrates the long history of the church.

I read that some people have been disappointed by a visit to this museum so felt I should leap in and offer my review. The Dom of Frankfurt is such a very important building both historically and spiritually. It is the former site of coronation for the Emperors of Germany and has a wealth of memorials, baroque and simpler on display in the main building. But its when you visit the museum that you get a true sense of the importance of this building in terms of religious history and artefact.

The museum is a two centre venue- the first being on the site of the cathedral cloisters- and is a small but well designed space full of dignity and has a great display. For me though its the Sacristy across the square that is the real gem. In the basement of Hause am Dom is the cathedrals treasury of rare and sacred objects- from gold statues of the patron saint -Bartholomew to Papal vestments- stained glass and incredible reliquaries.

You need to take a few moments to reflect on the wealth of the displays and then marvel at the Cathedrals central role in the history of Frankfurt- formerly a free Imperial city.

So worth a visit.

This building was reduced to bare walls as a result of allied bombing in WWII. It has been restored and still functions as a church. We attended a "Concert Evensong" in the building in May. Acoustics for choral singing are not the best.
