This was the first stop on our Baltic cruise and since we have been to Berlin in the past, we were interested in seeing the local area. Based on the fantastic reviews on TA, I contacted Dave, and decided to do the mini-tour of Warnemunde, which is the morning portion of the Straddling the Wall tour.
Andreas led the walk through this most interesting little port. Andreas was born and raised here so he was able to provide a great deal of perspective, history and knowledge of the area. He has lived through both the communist era and the new capitalist Germany. His comments regarding what life was like under communism were very insightful. He recommended seeing "Lives of Others" which won the best foreign language Oscar in 2006 or 2007. We watched it when we came home and found it to be a shocking tale of life under the communist STASI.
We had a stop for cakes and coffee in town and it was delightful. After 3 hours, the others in the group proceeded to Rostock but we stayed in the town and simply enjoyed walking around.
I cannot say enough about how great Andreas was. I wish he could have been our guide for the whole trip. For anyone who is not interested in a full day tour, I highly recommend this half day tour of Warnemunde.
