We stayed here while on a visit to Cologne for the Christmas markets in 2010. The place itself is easy enough to find, being a short walk from the Hauptbahnhof. The Reception was located on one side of the building and the rooms were located to the back of the same or another building (not sure which, as you had to leave Reception and walk around the corner by street to find the entrance to the room!). First thing I noticed when I entered the Reception was the smell of cigarette smoke (a turn-off for me). While the staff did not seem to be actually smoking at the desk, it appeared that they might have been. It created a poor first impression, and I was a bit worried as our friends were arriving shortly and I was the one that booked the place.
The rooms themselves turned out to be quite okay, being warm and spacious (more like apartments). On the security front, I was a bit concerned that if the front door was not closed properly that people from off the street could gain access to the corridor. The other thing was having to put on a coat (it was very cold in Cologne end of November!) when having to go for breakfast back around to the Reception side of the hotel.
Breakfast itself was a self service type in a basement room that looked a bit like a night club! The breakfast was fairly okay without being very inspiring!
Overall, I suppose the hotel was okay for a budget type hotel, but don't expect the fineries of a four star hotel!
