“Just about okay!”
Reviewed 14 June 2011

We stayed here while on a visit to Cologne for the Christmas markets in 2010. The place itself is easy enough to find, being a short walk from the Hauptbahnhof. The Reception was located on one side of the building and the rooms were located to the back of the same or another building (not sure which, as you had to leave Reception and walk around the corner by street to find the entrance to the room!). First thing I noticed when I entered the Reception was the smell of cigarette smoke (a turn-off for me). While the staff did not seem to be actually smoking at the desk, it appeared that they might have been. It created a poor first impression, and I was a bit worried as our friends were arriving shortly and I was the one that booked the place.

The rooms themselves turned out to be quite okay, being warm and spacious (more like apartments). On the security front, I was a bit concerned that if the front door was not closed properly that people from off the street could gain access to the corridor. The other thing was having to put on a coat (it was very cold in Cologne end of November!) when having to go for breakfast back around to the Reception side of the hotel.

Breakfast itself was a self service type in a basement room that looked a bit like a night club! The breakfast was fairly okay without being very inspiring!

Overall, I suppose the hotel was okay for a budget type hotel, but don't expect the fineries of a four star hotel!

We were looking for a cheap hotel (hard to find in Cologne) that was within the city ring. I must say that the location for this hotel is top notch, can't be beat - the Gestapo Museum is across the street and the City Museum just down the street. The pedestrian area Breitestr. is also around the corner with fantastic shopping and eating opportunities. It is maybe a 10 minute walk to the Dom.

The hotel was kind of strange. It is as if they purchased a bunch of old buildings and turned them into hotel rooms. So you pick up your key at one area (look for the sliding glass doors), but have to go back outside and down a bit to enter the building with your room (building 1-3). We asked for a non-smoking room and there was an ash tray in the room, but thank goodness it didn't stink. The room was actually clean, but very small and it was so poorly decorated that it made it seem dirty, although it wasn't. I learned a long time ago in London that there is a difference between dirty and run down. I would just say this place is run down. It was actually quiet, but the bed was very narrow and soft so if 2 people are sleeping, you both roll to the middle = at least one will for sure not sleep well. There is not really any space to put bags and the seat cushions on the chair were dingy, so I didn't want to set anything on them.

We paid 65 Euros (very cheap for Cologne and the location) for one night and breakfast was included. Breakfast is in a dungeon like room. It was scary as you walk down there, but it was actually decorated quite nice - besides the exposed wires and such. The buffet was a typical German breakfast buffet, but not 100% authentic - there was American-like looking cheese (in the plastic wrappers) for example - kind of weird. Oh, there were warm eggs - well, they should have been warm, they were cooked, but cold.

Staff acknowledged guests, but were aloof. No elevators (just so there are no surprises for those used to such extras).

Overall impression... I might expect a 3 star such as this hotel in London or Italy, but not Germany. Therefore, I would not stay here again.

The hotel is in 5-7 minutes walk from the main station. So the Cathedral and the Old City are quite near it.
The room and the bathroom were clean. It was warm in the room (that is very important to me). The bed was enough comfortable. The personnel was friendly.
The only problem was - you could hear people in the next rooms and the noise of the traffic outside.
As for breakfast - it was substantial if a little ...monotonous.
