“Stylish designer hotel - perfect area”
Reviewed 12 May 2013

A beautiful hotel in lovely area. This hotel is a bit away from the main tourist areas (about 20 - 25 min walk), but in a really lovely area. there are plenty of lovely bars and restaurants in walking distance (Haus Muller was 2 minute walk and excellent) and within a 5 minute walk is one of the lovely city gates. If you want a stylish hotel in a unique area away from the main tourist traps - then this is the place. Excellent English spoken by all staff and service was attentive and friendly. Really enjoyed it. The breakfast is superb - great choice and quality. Pillows... are very flat...but we are encountering this everywhere..so it's a European thing! Huge wet bathroom, couldn't fault the hotel at all.

Room Tip: Some rooms are smoking..can be a bit annoying with windows open.

Inadvertently we ended up in Hopper St. Joseph, while we thought we had reserved in Hopper St. Antonius. We found out in time, but it was a happy mistake. Both Hoppers (and the third one) were formerly buildings with religious purposes. St. Joseph used to be a child-care centre, run by the nuns.

The rooms (ours was 310) are true paradigms of modern styling. The design combines excellent taste with ingenious design solutions to make the most of the modestly available space. Each room has a docking station for modern machinery such as iPads, but also, thanks to an art project, an artistic sculpture. Double beds can be separated or joined via a simple rolling system. There is a fold-up ironing board, a fridge, a TV, and an unexpected place to leave your valuables (there's space for a laptop). Wood, white, green, marble, and subtle lighting make for a calmly sophisticated atmosphere. The breakfast, in a room with stained glass, was very good, too.

St. Josef is located in the Southern part of town, the "Suedstadt." This is a 30 minute walk from the Central station (or a short ride with tram 16), but the bonus is that this is a more attractive part than the Altstad, the Old Town. The area has ateliers, designer shops, hip restaurants and bars, and the lovely, broad avenues and boulevards typical of chique 19th century city-development.

Out of curiosity, we had a peak at the Hopper St. Anthonius the next day. A kind lady at the reception showed us several rooms here, too. About ten years old, it has the same tasteful design as St Josef (which, however is even more state-of the art; it opened around 2009). St. Anthonius has a greater variety of rooms, including semi-self catering apartments, and marvelous views, as well as, it seems, more conference facilities, and a fitness room & sauna. Moreover, it is a mere 5-10 minutes walk from Central Station, Ludwig Museum, and the Dome.

But we would still advise the St. Josef, primarily because of the location in a more interesting part of town.

A little concerned when they told me my room was in the basement but I need not have worried. Three french windows and very light. Fabulous room. Very modern. Unusual furniture and lighting. A little statue/bust in the room with its own light. All marble wetroom. Everything immaculate.

Grand dining room and breakfast with very wide choice. Free wifi. Small fitness area with a step machine and weights machine.

Staff very friendly and helpful. Very good value compared to other hotels in Cologne.

Having stayed at the St Antonius, I tried this in May and was very impressed! The team have produced another lovely, relaxed hotel with the perfectly balanced minimilistic rooms, tastefully converted from some sort of historic religious building. Not as conveniently located as the St Antonius, but you get the same comfortable rooms and very decent breakfast. Perfect for a short business trip.

Just back from 3 nights here and despite the previous review I can only say that all the staff we encountered were cheerful, very helpful and informative, always a smile and welcome on our return from the Christmas Markets....perhaps it is just how you approach them. They even kept our luggage when we arrived too early to check-in and we found it in our room on our return later.

The hotel itself was clean, tidy and well appointed.......particularly liked the small library area just off reception with its collection of interesting non-fiction books, many in English.

Small gripes about the room were: quirky lighting design not greatly practical, 2 single duvets on a double bed (how does that work?), pillows too soft and compressible (but extra readily provided), shower temperature a bit variable a times of high demand.

Buffet breakfast provided was fresh, comprehensive selection of hot and cold, excellent bread selection. Serving staff very attentive and responsive.

Summary: we will definitely use this hotel again when in Cologne.

Room Tip: All rooms seem to be identical in layout therefore equally good.

I had to stay in this hotel several times. The neighborhood is a bit grumpy and the rooms are a bit small but okay. It actually could have been a nice place to stay, but the reception staff unfortunately is so unfriendly that it's not. The first time I experienced this a few weeks ago I thought that it was just bad luck, but this time I know it's symptomatic.
