Owner description: This old Nazi prison, preserved in its original state, is a terrifying reminder of the horrors of the Holocaust.

Don't miss a chance to take an audio guide, since most of the exhibition is only in German.

The center is a memorable piece of history. A Gestapo prison is restored in the basement, with original facilities and inmate inscriptions on the walls, serving as a direct evidence of cruelty of the place and times. Upstairs a huge collection of all sorts of documents (photos, flyers, newspapers, audio recordings) related to National Socialism in Cologne and in Germany is presented. The place contains a great deal of history and you might need a lot of time to inspect every document.

Very interesting and informative memorial and exhibition about the rising and falling of NS. Basement's prisons and bunker, with the inner courtyard, tell the story of the prisoners of Gestapo in this EL-DE Haus, and they have many messages and scribblings on the walls still. This floor is also available in English. Very touching, telling quite many individual stories too.

The two upper floors have an informative and vast collection of photos, magazines, posters, documents etc. about the history of NS in Cologne, unfortunately all in German, but you get audio guides in several languages. Anyhow it is interesting even just to see and wonder how you would have handled it all during that time. Very unique collection, I must say, having seen quite many WW2 memorials and museums.

The former Gestapo prison area is simply stunning and shocking.
The upper floors are not translated to any language unfortunately.

It's a fairly large museum and the basement is so well preserved with the cells and even bathrooms intact. It's eerie and haunting but not too scary. The basement smells of mold and is dark but it's the best part of the museum. Due to the building being used as a municipal building for pensions for many years the top floors weren't preserved after the war. All the original Gestapo furnishings and evidence from the prison disappeared until victims protested it being recreated into a memorial. The top floors are interesting and full of history and there is about 3 hours of material to see. We enjoyed it, it's a must see for cologne.

If you don't speak german, you'll need audioguide since only the basement exposition is translated to english. Other than that the museum is amasing, very informative, a must go in Cologne!!
Another thing, although it closes at 18hs, you'll be asked to leave 15 mins before that, so calculate your time carefully (I spent a little more than 2 hours and it wasn't enough, 3 hours should sufice).
