“Excellent Customer Service and great location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 December 2013

We arrived quite early from the train station at around 11.30 am and I was a little unwell so desperately wanted to sleep, so we sat in reception and were made to feel very welcome. She initially said we could check in until 1400 but we got to our room at 12.30, I was very happy and had my much needed sleep! The wifi is free for the whole stay and connectivity is excellent (I'm using it to write to you now dear reader!) the shower does indeed flood but easy enough to dry with towels, the radiators are very efficient and the beds very comfortable and a cosy room, on the small side but the hotel was built in 1265 so I think that can be forgiven! Continental breakfast, plenty of bread! The staff are lovely and very helpful with great local knowledge. Very cheap and breakfast included with a 10 minute walk to the heart of cologne.

This is a cheap hotel in the centre of the city. The rooms are comfortable and warm. Breakfast is continental and plentiful. Staff are friendly and allowed us to have a small family gathering in reception. Shower flooded the bathroom floor each time we used it but no problem as it had dried by the time we came back in.

This was a strange hotel experience. The entrance, dining room, service and stairways were fabulous, if quirky. The location, on the edge of the gay district, was most entertaining, especially the next door shop window. (Not for the stuffy or narrow-minded.) And only a 10 minute walk from the Dom and the heart of the city.

But the rooms? Hmm. You get what you pay for and these prices were on the economy scale. The windows didn't shut very well, the gutters were broken so the rainwater noise was a bit loud and the paper thin toilet door leaves nothing to the imagination. The beds were way too soft and no mini bar and the curtains and fitting were in need of a little TLC.

Okay, for those less picky or business travellers but not for a romantic getaway.

Room Tip: What you gain on the street side avoiding the mosquito breeding ground in the centre you lose a litt...

Great location - just 10 minutes walk from the center (it is a gay district so just be aware of that but i wouldn't even realized - no disco, noise or strange people in neighborhood), very good breakfast, friendly staff, beautiful hotel decor - public areas
But small room, no fridge, very soft bed, shower curtain too short so you have water everywhere

For a last minute booking we couldn't get our preferred choice and ended up here with 2rooms for 2nights. The reception staff were ok but obviously some of them didn't want to be there. Rooms were adequate but basic. Clean enough but a bit tatty. Breakfast was included with our price and was fine, it included eggs and fresh fruit, not just bread. Whilst the hotel is reasonably central it would be a long haul to wheel suitcases over the cobble stones to/from the station. The hotel is cheap and ok, but personally I would prefer to pay a bit more and get a bit more.

Room Tip: Get a room no higher than 3rd floor to use the free WiFi. Otherwise you end up sitting on the stairs...

No one is ever going to fall in love with this hotel, with its gloomy dark wood foyer, small rooms and unappealingly brown bathrooms, but if you're in Cologne for a short stay and want to save money in a cheap hotel, walkable distance from the sites then sure, book a night here!

My tiny single room was far from special – cold, facing fire escapes and other rooms – and the windowless bathroom smelt of damp and the shower flooded the floor every time I used it. The feathered, flat excuse for a pillow wasn't much good and the receptionist was pretty unpleasant when I asked for a hypo-allergenic one.

Still, I was in Cologne for less than 24 hours – and on a budget trip – so I could overlook all these things because the hotel was cheap and in a decent location. Yes, it's surrounded by sex shops but so what? You can walk to Heumarkt U-bahn in a couple of minutes & by default, the start of the Christmas markets around there as well (in the right season of course!). It's maybe 10-15 minutes to the Dom and the shops & all in all, it's pretty handy for that.

Breakfast was poor, but again if you're only there for a night, some rolls, eggs & cold meats will do just fine, washed down with some horrendously sweet juice!

Everything about this hotel screams 'it'll just have to do cos I'm being a cheapo' And sometimes that's fine.

Myself and a group of 5 girlfriends spent three nights here just this weekend. We got a really good deal, all paying £45.00 each for the whole duration for a twin room.
Location is perfect, just a few minutes walk the the Rhine, a little further to the Dom (Catherdral).
We went for the Christmas markets which were really lovely but VERY busy. I have never seen so many people on one place, it did spoil it a bit as you were constantly being pushed and shoved around and you couldn't have a leisurely wander about. Anyway, i'm reviewing the hotel not the markets....
This is now a non smoking hotel (noted alot of other reviews complaining of smoking throughout the hotel), there was no smoking anywhere in the hotel (except out the of the window by me, sorry non smokers!!) Well, we were on the 3rd floor! The rooms were clean and warm, with a shower room and toilet also clean with plenty of instant hot water. Rooms were small and basic, they did have a safe in the wardrobe and the room door locked securely. All the lights in the hallway come on automatically when you step out of your room. Beds were small but comfy.
The reception staff - some were friendlier than others - but all helpful when required and spoke good English. I speak a little German which did help us out, but most people did tend to speak better English than I do German. Breakfast was included in our price, it was a typical continental type, bread, toast, tea, coffee, fruits, cereals, cheese, meats, boiled and scrambled eggs....plenty of choice. 6.30am - 10am (i think, my room mate and I only made it once on Monday and that was because we were going home!).
All in all as a base for a weekend away, this hotel ticks all the boxes :)
