“The location is the best asset of this hotel!”
Reviewed 3 January 2014

Located right across the Koln hbf, the hotel is within walkingdistance from most shopping streets. Previously it was called Best western so we were also a bit surprised to found out upon arrival (we booked 1.5 month ago and name changed 2d ago, nobody informed us). We arrived and there was a banner put above the hotelwall with Wyndham so be informed if you're about to arrive the coming days or weeks. So you know you are at the right place. Hotel had no parking, we have parked at the public parking next to the Marriott in the street closeby the hotel, 15€/day. Hotel has a good service, we had some issues but they were resolved without hesitation. Bathroom is really really really small, the most tiny I have ever seen, claustrophobic even. Room we had was outdated and beds not that comfortable. But as said service good and staff really kind. Suggestion for supergood steak is El Chango, 10 min to walk (check TripA review also). Suggestion for good fresh Italian food is Vapiano, trainride of 2 min and 1 stop at Koln messe (get out of trainstation, escalator upstairs and is located directly on the right).

We arrived by train in Cologne and came out of the station by the Cathedral. Bad move. We took a taxi who took us round the houses and charged us 15 Euros. If you come by train - go out of the station the opposite end to the Cathedral - and the hotel is there right in front of you!
We booked direct with Best Western and all paperwork stated this was the "Best western Grand City Hotel Köln" - and indeed so did the sign on the hotel and everything inside.
Staff were very pleasant and helpful. Showed where the bar was and where breakfast was served - however we were also told there was no longer a restaurant. But to be fair - with the choice of restaurants at the station and in the town there really is no need to have one for guests at the hotel.
We stayed at this hotel twice - once before Christmas on our way to Sweden and then again just before the New Year on our return to the UK. The first stay was cramped. The room was small and very hot and the bathroom tiny - mainly due to having a bath rather than a shower. But to be fair the bed was quite comfortable so we did get the important nights sleep we needed. Breakfast was served early (6.30) which was good for us as our train left at 8.30. Not a brilliant buffet but adequate. This hotel caters for many coach trips and on that day they were also leaving early and had emptied most of the supplies of the basics such as bread, cheese and hot food. It may be a good question to ask when you arrive - are there any coach parties in and what time are they planning to have breakfast in the morning. Then aim to go before or after for a more relaxed breakfast. On check out we asked if there were any rooms with walk in showers - and were told our booking for the return leg would be changed.
On our return visit the room was much larger, had better air conditioning and a very big bathroom with a double sized walk-in shower. This was a very pleasant room so I would advise that you ask for a room with walk-in shower when you book. We had more time to spare before our train left in this direction so we were able to enjoy a more leisurely breakfast. As before though it is not sparkling, but adequate.
The rooms have the normal things you find in a Best Western hotel - free bottled water, coffee/tea making facilities and a safe (big enough for a lap top).
The hotel is perfect in its location and the standard is ideal for short visits.
The points given for the rooms is an average as the first room would have been rated "1" and the second "5"

Room Tip: The room we had with the walk-in shower was 175 - and all around that area were the same according t...

This hotel was honestly both good and bad. Before I get into the hotel description, I just want to make a few suggestions. First off, pack light! Or, if you are a couple, try to share a bag. Secondly, bring your own pillow. Thirdly, invest in earplugs. And last, but not least, don't bring back any left overs from eating out.
To begin, this hotel is incredibly centrally located and within walking distance of everything! The Dom, the bridge with Love Locks, and mega tons of shopping!
There is no hotel parking lot, but there was a parking garage down around the corner and it really wasn't all that bad on price!
Almost all of the staff was fluent in multiple languages, including English!! (The only ones who did not speak English were the cleaning staff, who were a little rude when we didn't speak German back to them, but we let it roll of our shoulder.)
Free Wi-Fi baby! Yay! It is super easy to log onto their Wifi, but it is heavily shared by the entire hotel between 7pm-10pm. The large consumption of wifi by the entire hotel slows it down big time, but it was still usable!! The T.V. had two channels in English, both of which were news channels. I will say though, Cloud Atlas in German is interestingly confusing!
The rooms were cleaned very well and the cleaning staff left us bags of gummy bears instead of the usual chocolates, as well as a complimentary bottle of water, which was actually kind of cool! The only thing not cleaned was the water container used to boil water, but it honestly wasn't a big deal. The greeter's desk staff was more than happy to find me a clean one!
The rooms are a little small. This is where I suggest sharing a bag or packing light. Space is limited; I tripped trying to get over my bag so many times!
Our bed was a little stiff, but the pillows were... I don't even know if they can be classified as pillows... They sucked. Bring your own!!!
The room didn't have a Microwave or a refrigerator, so the option to bring back food from anywhere was out of the question. We did bring from home cups of instant oatmeal, which we cooked by pouring into it the hot water from the water boiling container!
Their website says the rooms are sound proof. I think there should be some clarification on this. You certainly will not hear the people in the rooms above you or beside you. You will, on the other hand, hear every honk, beep, vroom, and squeak from the vehicles outside as well as every word spoken on the loud speaker and every train to pass through the railway station. Earplugs are amazing!
I would totally suggest this hotel for people going to Cologne for a day or two. We were booked for three nights, and only stayed for two. Three nights was just too long to be squeezed into the small room, even if it was just for sleeping and resting.

Room Tip: Ask for fluffier pillows and to see your room before committing to it!

Conveniently very close to the main railway station this hotel is ideal for seeing the sights in Koln
being just a short walk from the cathedral.
The hotel has a good bar and restaurant and rooms minibar television and coffee making facilities.
Buffet dinner offered a wide choice of food and was well presented.
Our front facing bedroom was adequate in size for a one night stay but the noise from the trains
and loudspeaker system at the station opposite early morning requires ear plugs to sleep soundy.
Breakfast, we could not ask for more choice, absolutely great.

Room Tip: Avoid bedrooms facing the railway station.

As other reviewers stated the hotel is right across the train station. A 5 minute walk across the street, through the train station, and you're right in front of the Cathedral. As far as location goes, it's great. Within walking distance to all 6 Christmas Markets.
Park houses are a 4 to 5 minute walk away, the hotel has no parking of it's own. Average price to park was 15 euros a day.
They allowed us to check in 2 hours early, which was a plus, and they will hold your luggage at departure if you want to sight see more.
I cannot comment on breakfast other than the fact it was 18 euros per person....a little steep in my opinion. The train station offered a variety of breakfasts and coffee places and more reasonably priced than the hotel.
The noise from the train station can be a problem if you are not used to traffic noise. We were on the 9th floor, so not too bad, however it was really windy when we stayed and the rattling from the loose siding on the little balcony of the room was a problem. We did report it to them so maybe it won't be an issue in the future. I stuffed a magazine in between and it stopped the rattling but you could still hear others rattling.
The bathroom is large enough for 1 person, 2 if one person is in the shower.
The bed left a lot to be desired, very soft, lumpy, and comes with your standard very thin European feather pillows. Bring you're own if you're able.
Be careful of the overhead shelf in the "closet area", it doesn't get dusted so if you put a suitcase up there, be prepared to get a wad of dust bunnies in your face when you pull it down. (yuck)
They have instant coffee/tea in the room and 2 bottles of water per day, which is nice.
They have liquid soap in the shower and hand sink, but no other amenities (shower cap, etc.) unless you ask.
Overall, an average decent place for a short stay if you can get a good rate/deal from booking.com or hotels.com.

Located across from the central station, and opposite Cologne Cathedral, this hotel offers the perfect location for those that like to use public transportation. Other highlights of this hotel include a friendly staff and free wifi access for more than one device! For a short stay is a good option, but if you expect a comfortable hotel you may be disappointed. The rooms are clean but very small and so is the bathroom. The hotel also is a little noisy if your room faces the train station.

We stayed at this hotel for 2 nights to visit the Christmas Markets, and the location is good, right next to the train station, and Cathedral where the largest market is found. The staff were pleasant and helpful throughout our stay and the bedroom adequate for our needs, albeit a little small, and noisy at night if you had your window ajar as it was so hot in the room! Being just before Christmas breakfast was full during peak times, but a warning was in your room to go before 0830 or wait till 1030, and the food was good and constantly refreshed . If you had to wait then you waited in the bar area and they collected you when your table was ready.
In all it suited our needs
