“Overnight business trip stay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 March 2014

We stayed here overnight for a business visit to the H+H show in the city centre and it was perfect for our needs - close enough to the airport, good value, good breakfast (though a little expensive) and nice, clean, basic rooms with comfy beds (much nicer than you expect from the outside of the hotel!). Free wifi would be a nice addition though.

One word of warning - we stayed on the busy road side (rooms 101-103) and it gets very noisy from the early hours of the morning! Ask for a room at the back instead.

There's also a really excellent little restaurant round the back of the hotel, overlooking the Rhine, which you must visit. The food is divine and the staff really lovely - it's called Haus Knott. Not much else going on around the hotel though, but then you don't really look for that on a business trip, so that was fine.

Room Tip: Get a room at the back!

The hotels location not far from Cologne/ Bonn Airport is an easy and straightforward 10 minute drive south of the motorway to the south of Cologne City Centre. It is situated in the suburb of Porz. Fairly noisy rooms as most overlook the main road. However we had booked a Superior Room ( No Privilege Rooms available) which was quite a good size with an alcove window area with desk with one view that looked towards the nearby River Rhine. However you need to look down a tunnel of other buildings so the view is what might be termed "restricted". The bathroom whilst clean and cheerful was really quite small with only room for a shower rather than a bath which seemed strange for a "Superior" room. Only one pillow on each bed and only one spare when we had booked a double room. In other Mercure Hotels in Germany Superior rooms get a free (albeit limited) mini bar. However here you had to pay for any drinks taken. Also the hotel had no restaurant only a bar so you have to go out for dinner. There are however a few restaurants within a short walk. There is a breakfast room where we had a reasonable breakfast with a small range of cooked items on the buffet (which were actually hot for a change. Aparently this Mercure is a franchise and is not owned by Accor the parent company and clearly the brand standards dont seem to be religiously observed. Pleasant reception staff were however very helpful and sleep quality was fine. Dont think I would use again however as not up to Mercure's usual standards. Also quite expensive at Euro 158 incl breakfast despite not seeming very busy the night we stayed.

Room Tip: Ask for superior room with a river view and at back of hotel to avoid traffic noise

This was a Mercure hotel so was expecting something quite special - the pictures on the website certainly give that impression.

I was given a room in what was more or less the attic - I took the lift to the top floor of the hotel then had to fight my way through doors and up stairs to find the room, which at first sight seemed ok. although the bed wasn’t that comfy.

I didn’t realise until I returned back to the room at night that it was a smoking room and when I lied down to go to sleep, could tell it was. There was also a constant humming noise which I assume was the air conditioning units on the roof of the hotel where I was. If the noise couldn’t get any noisier, the cleaners storeroom was directly opposite mine so I was woken up by them.

On top of that, wifi was chargeable - it’s free in Ibis Budget!

If this is what Mercure have to offer then I don’t think I’ll bother in future!

Relatively small business style hotel. Very clean but dull looking hotel. Big enough rooms but you should avoid the ones facing a noisy street if you can. They are equipped with a safe and a mini bar but no AC.
Note that the hotel is not adjacent to the airport and requires a short drive. There is an S-Bahn station within a few minutes’ walk that takes you to the center of Cologne and the main station.
The Rhine is just a block away along with a couple of nice restaurants overlooking the river and footpaths following the river for jogging.
Internet package a bit pricey, best to take their “business package” that also includes breakfast.
Friendly service but the infrastructure is disappointing to Mercure’s standards. You’ll want to stay there only if the price is right and if you’re on a short business trip.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms facing the noisy street
