Reviewed 22 March 2014

Stayed here for 2 nights in March 2014. Everything was basic and acceptable however pillows were too thin and the double bed was small! Bathroom was not the best as it looked like it needed a renewal. It was old. Breakfast was lovely and breakfast room was nice.

I stayed at the Guennewig as my base while at the Euroshop trade show in Duesseldorf.
A great stay. The hotel is perfect if you just need a clean comfortable room and a good breakfast. The staff were very helpful and the breakfast was a great start to the day.

Overall very happy, its not 5 stars but very clean and comfortable.

Repeat visit to this hotel right next to Cologne Hbf, managed to get an upgrade this time to a larger room which was really spacious. Breakfast room has been updated into more of a bar-style, which is a bit of a surprise but the overall price/quality of this hotel sets the standard for in this city. Although the rooms are close to the railway and bus station, they are soundproofed so sleep wasn't a problem.

The most notable feature of this hotel is its amazing location. Previous posts have mentioned this but I don't feel that they've done it justice! It is literally on the doorstep of Cologne HBF train & bus stations (the rooms are well sound-proofed) and a two minute walk from the Cathedral, which can be reached easily by walking through the train station. Other attractions such as the Rhine, the Fruh brewery, EL-DE Haus and countless authentic German pubs and restaurants were also a very short walk away. The rooms were clean and tidy, ideal for a short stay. The breakfast was better than anticipated: a wide choice of food including cold meats, bread, bacon, eggs, pastries, fruit, cereal, olives, cheese etc. There's also a nice little pub next door. A great little find and somewhere we'll definitely stay again. For access to the Christmas markets, this hotel is superb.

Stayed there on a business trip that happened to be when there was a carnival in town. Which meant that they played banging german techno-folk music at the hotel bar until into the night.

When I approached the staff about the fact that I could not sleep because of the noise they were extremely unhelpful and I even got hung up on when calling the reception at one point. (Mind you I was very polite).

So all in all...don't bother with staying there if you care about customer service at all.

Room Tip: If you can't avoid staying there...avoid rooms close to the hotel bar.

The Kommerz is located next to the main train station in the center of Cologne. Could not be more conveniently located for visitors attending trade functions at Koelnmesse located across the Rhine. Five floors - perhaps 100 rooms. The rooms are clean, very small, and very functional. Seriously hot water! Rates include a very good breakfast buffet - very substantial selection of meats/cheeses/breads/fruits etc... If you are lucky, wonderful matjes herring and smoked salmon! Rates are usually quite reasonable, except during the ANUGA trade show - similar situation with all hotels in and near Cologne. Staying here allows you to walk across the Rhine via the footbridge attached to the main train bridge over the river, which for me is worth the price of admission. Have stayed here for the last 3 shows - we will be back in 2 years for the next ANUGA.

Room Tip: you would prefer a room facing away from the train station - although the rooms have been soundproof...

Love the location 1 1/2 blocks from the train station. Plenty of shops and restaurants all within walking distance from the hotel. The greetings received when arriving at the Hotel were wonderful, and they spoke English which was a great help to us. Rooms were very friendly and comfortable. Breakfast was the best I have had in a long time and the atmosphere was perfect. A little noisy on the South West side due to the busses and cab area, but around 21:00 became quite. Very clean and friendly hotel and would recommend if ever visiting Koln.

Room Tip: Higher floors have less A/C unit noise, and the Corner suites are large and sunny.
