“Excellent Location”
Reviewed 24 November 2011

I had the privilege of staying @ the Mondial for 5 nights.

Location: Central downtown. Steps away from the Cathedral, Ludwig museum, restaurants, bars and shops.

Room: Small but excellent. One queen bed or two singles. Really clean and nicely decorated. Not enough room for luggage storage. Standard television showing 4 English channels.

Bathrooms: Single sink, large shower, no bath nicely decorated.

Spa: To die for. Really nice, free, extremely clean. Caution coed facility and lots of nudity. Steam room, sauna, multiple jet shower with rain head.

Concierge was extremely helpful in finding train times and cost.

This hotel is in a great location, it is within 3 minutes walk of one of the most impressive gothic cathedrals in Northern Europe, the Dom. it is also very close to the railway station, the Rhine & the old town of Cologne, it's very conveneient for the many bars, cafes & also a great selection of restaurants. Its also close to the main shopping street & come Chrismas time there is a traditional Christmas market in the next square. Most of the puiblic areas are very spacious, the furniture is good quality & design is appealing. The staff on reception are great, all speaking excellent English. The breakfast is good with a varied selection of hot & cold buffet style, with fruits cheeses etc, all of what you would expect really.

There has been building works going on outside the front of this hotel for at least 5 years, I think they are doing some tunneling work for an extenstion of the undrground train system ?

My main problem with this hotel is the size of the rooms. They are smaller than most other hotles & this is not made any better by the room furniture. There is a large TV/Minibar cabinet which dominates the rooms, there is an old style CRT TV within this and you have to open a cumbersome 90 degree door to access it, which then makes the room look even smaller, also meaning that yo have to squeeze between this and the end of the bed to get round it. The bathroom is nice, but no rooms I have stayed in here have had baths, there is however a nice big walk in shower with a vert powerful head.

Views from rooms can vary, you could be lucky if you get a room at the front & get view of the Dom (cathedral) but otherwise there is no view to speak of, but then if you are just sleeping here, you won't miss much. There is however a grotty view from the stairwell which looks out over the inner 'courtyard' which I would desribe as an inaccessable roof garden with weeds growing out of gravel, not sure if some of the inner corridor rooms might look out over this as well though ?

There is a nice bar inside the lobby, more of a small pub style really with quite a nice atmosphere in the evenings. The hotel also has it's own car park which is accessed from the rear of the building and via an impressive vehicle lift.

Room Tip: Try and get a room at the front, you can get a view of the Dom (cathedral)

This is very good hotel indeed and the location could not be any better it is true. Unfortunately there are the ever so popular design faults that all hotels refurbished or not seem to be having these days. By design faults i mean things that do not work correctly and this is because of their design! For example becasue the water line of the tap to the shower head was rigid, it was actually in the way between the water and my body. Then the shower glass wall that was supposed to keep the water in the bathtub was small and leaking and was creating a swimming pool in the bathroom every time i had a shower. Picky you are going to say maybe....i don't think so....at these prices you do not excuse that stuff....actually i do not excuse some stuff at any price whatsoever and this with the swimming pool is a serious comfort impeding fault. Anyway....as an atmosphere not that bad of a hotel anyway and staff are excellent.

Hotel is on opposite side of the Dom from the train station - about 300 metres walk.

In Nov 2011, road construction right in front. Hotel exterior looks like basic budget type place. But once inside, modern decor, nice rooms with great beds. Room size is good for Europe. Bath was nice size and very nice for a long soak. Interior rooms extremely quiet with windows that open. Substantial buffet breakfast, (but pricy like most hotels) - we ate there and enjoyed it 3 times.

Very handy location for old town, Dom, river front, most museums and train station.

Front desk and restaurant staff very helpful and friendly. Made for a very pleasant stay.

This hotel is perfectly situated next to the Dom, 2 blocks from the rhine and central to anything you want to do in Cologne. The rooms are a decent size, quiet and immaculate. Bathroom and shower were great. Parking and breakfast are pricey, but there are plenty of coffee & pastry shops nearby. The staff were friendly and helpful. If you are visiting Cologne definitely stay here.

Room Tip: They have smoking rooms; hard to find anymore.

Great central location - perfect for popping in & out during the day/night.
Small but clean room in a business type hotel.
The bar fridge wasn’t working and it took over 24hr for it to be fixed.
The shower water leaks onto the floor across the doorway, so a towel has to be used each time to soak up pools of water on floor after every use (otherwise it runs onto the carpet)). Very stingy on amenities, especially the soap (only given one and had to keep moving between shower and sink, also not given a new one every day).
Liked the free small bottle of evian water (as the water from the tap is strongly chlorinated).
Very hard uncomfortable beds, pillows not comfy (1 european, 1 normal), neither of us got a good restful nights sleep.
A particular Concierge was extremely helpful (can’t remember his name) supplying umbrellas for guests use and advising general info on restaurants/shops.
Expensive but good breakfast, with a good range of cereals, juices and breads. Good coffee (none in room). Sausages, bacon, eggs and an excellent range of deli produce such as smoked salmon, salamis etc. Plenty of fruit.
