Mercure Hotel Koeln City Friesenstrasse
Ranked #42 of 263 Hotels in Cologne
Reviewed 14 August 2014

I stayed here over the period of August 8 - 11 2014. I found the hotel reception staff to be helpful and knowledgeable in regards to all my tourist questions (and I had a lot). They were friendly and professional in their approach to any questions regarding the hotel facilities also.

The room itself was of a decent size with a comfortable bed. It was also clean, and had a lot of the things that I needed. Plus free fizzy water, coca cola and beers complimentary of the hotel which was extra nice(no charges either for any replacements). The room cleaning staff were also helpful, although there were a few language barriers (I found they were not as proficient in English as the reception staff, but then I could have been a bit more bi-lingual also).

I had a few little niggles about the room facilities though. These were: no milk available for coffee or tea; the room was quite hot at times and there were only thick quilts on the bed (inevitably I found myself sleeping without them on me); the step into the bath/shower was on the high side so an elderly person may find that a bit tricky (there was a handle to hold on to though); a lack of English speaking channels on the TV; and, finally, I did find an empty beer can in the press under the TV. However, these are only small niggles and didn't affect my overall enjoyment of the room and facilities.

I never got to use the bar or restaurant so can't comment there. I was told breakfast would cost 18 euros which I personally think is expensive.

Finally, the Cathedral, Rhine, shops, bars, restaurants are all within reasonable distance - and very close by - of this hotel. I found it was as quick to go by foot as by any form of public transport, but that's just a personal view.

One last thing: a lot of shops, restaurants, and other facilities close on Sundays. This is worth noting. However, kiosks stay open so they can cover off a lot of your basic requirements. There is a kiosk nearly right outside the hotel.

I would definitely stay at this hotel again when next in Cologne.

Room Tip: I got a room to the right side of the hotel away from the bars, etc. It was on one of higher floors...

The first benefit of staying here is the location. It's not in the Centre of all the tourist Hotspots. The shopping tourist can find a number of hidden gems nearby. There's a kiosk right outside the hotel for those on a strict budget. It is a bit busy on Saturdays with the number of pubs and breweries in the same lane. I highly recommend it for its cleanliness and facilities. It's cosy and the view isn't half bad. It's air-conditioned and has a bath tub. Extra pillows and duvets. A minibar and other basic amenities. WiFi isn't free. The only thing I was a bit upset with is that the room wasn't ready in the requested time.

The Mercure Hotel Köln City Friesenstrasse is located in the bustling Friesenstrasse. Nearby is the Friesenplatz with public transport links to a number of interesting tourist sites. The city centre and central station are only a short walk away.
The Friesenviertel is a great place, loads of nice bars and restaurants and, not to forget, Brauerei Paffgen for the best beer in town.
Our room (403) was well equipped and large enough, the bathroom was small but efficient. the room has A/C and the windows could be opened. Streetnoise was absolutely no problem. A nice touch was the free minibar, two beer, one coke and a bottle of water were free every day.
For sure we will go back to Cologne, for sure we will stay at the The Mercure Hotel Köln City.

Good:
Surrounded by many restaurants and cafes, close to the subway station. My room had a nice deep bathtub as well. Bar keeper was very friendly and knowledgeable about the local beer.

Bad:
The only public PC's screen faces to the reception and the staff are monitoring! I feel like they should re-position it for privacy. Very slow internet connection as well as it does not work in a safe, recommended mode. They need to upgrade it.

I stayed here for 1 night and was very impressed with the reception and all the staff, the bar staff were great, very friendly and professional and understood our English language, secure underground parking was a bonus too. Very close for all the visiting to do in Cologne.

Room Tip: 316 is road side.

Overall: Dated but great location.

The Mercure is a 15-20 minute walk west from the central train station. A couple of blocks south is a large shopping district with cafes and restaurants. The Jameson Distillery Pub is a great lunch or dinner choice, only a block from the hotel (they also offer an Irish breakfast). The location is the best part of the hotel, and do not make the mistake of just walking to the Cathedral area. Take your time to explore the area around the hotel.

Check-in went smooth and the staff were efficient. Secure luggage storage was provided upon check-out. Breakfast seemed rather expensive given the number of other options in the area.

The room was clean and average size, but dated. The AC worked well, and even facing the street the street noise was low enough to leave the window open at night. The towels were a disappointment for a four star hotel, they were clearly worn out and have seen better days. The internet worked fine and the speed was reasonable.

One thing to note is that, compared to many other areas of Europe, many restaurants only took cash.

I recommend this hotel to any traveler who's visiting Cologne. This hotel is situated in the center of cologne which makes it easier to travel within city. Cathedral and shopping area is walking distance. Travelers who are interested in partying and pub or club hopping this is the place to be since all majors pubs and clubs are walking distance. I visited Cologne to participate in the ITEC conference, even the main conference hall was 15 minutes of a train ride.
