This was the best day of our visit to Germany. We boarded at Koblenz, and took a trip to Bacharach, stopping at St. Goar to pick up and drop off passengers. To really see the scenery, get a table on the outside or upper deck. We travelled in early October so it wasn’t as crowded as the peak months and there were plenty of places to choose from, although the weather was perfect.
Booking the tickets at their ticket office in Koblenz was much better for me than booking on-line. I’m not computer-phobic, quite the opposite, but being able to talk to the person selling the tickets, and getting direct advice and suggestions on which of the many trips they offer, enabled me to select just the right tour, which would have been harder just using their web site. This only works if you’re staying in the area, because all booking have to be made at least 24 hours before departure. So we booked on day and came back the next.
There’s plenty of options for food and drink to buy, in fact there was a whole carnival feel to the event.
While the cruise itself is very relaxing, and a welcome change from driving place to place, it’s the scenery that’s the main event. We did pass by the Lorelei statue, but it was the castles that held the interest. The Rhine valley is chock with vines on hillsides, castles on hill tops, villages, churches, and all manner of commerical and pleasure craft going up and down the river. For all its quietness, the Rhine is a busy place, a key part of the German economy.
