“Was a good diversion for an hour, but seemed to miss some sites and was a bit disorganized”
Reviewed 8 September 2013

For the time and distance covered, it felt like it could have been more informative. Also, we got on board and chairs were stacked in the middle of the deck. People just grabbed chairs and put them wherever they wanted to sit, making for a bit of a chaotic jumble. The price was good, though, and it was nice having narration in German and English.

Good day out, great views of the river, the banks and the people swimming and paddling. Nice commentary for the cruise. one of the staff/waitress was a little rude. Relaxing and interesting but not too amazing/a must-do thing.

“Relaxing, enjoyable”
Reviewed 22 August 2013

This was the best day of our visit to Germany. We boarded at Koblenz, and took a trip to Bacharach, stopping at St. Goar to pick up and drop off passengers. To really see the scenery, get a table on the outside or upper deck. We travelled in early October so it wasn’t as crowded as the peak months and there were plenty of places to choose from, although the weather was perfect.

Booking the tickets at their ticket office in Koblenz was much better for me than booking on-line. I’m not computer-phobic, quite the opposite, but being able to talk to the person selling the tickets, and getting direct advice and suggestions on which of the many trips they offer, enabled me to select just the right tour, which would have been harder just using their web site. This only works if you’re staying in the area, because all booking have to be made at least 24 hours before departure. So we booked on day and came back the next.

There’s plenty of options for food and drink to buy, in fact there was a whole carnival feel to the event.

While the cruise itself is very relaxing, and a welcome change from driving place to place, it’s the scenery that’s the main event. We did pass by the Lorelei statue, but it was the castles that held the interest. The Rhine valley is chock with vines on hillsides, castles on hill tops, villages, churches, and all manner of commerical and pleasure craft going up and down the river. For all its quietness, the Rhine is a busy place, a key part of the German economy.

“Castles, castles, castles”
Reviewed 21 August 2013

You can use a German Rail Pass day so that you can ride the boat for free. Getting on the boat at Mainz at 8:45 is the only way you can make it the entire journey to Cologne in one day. Getting on at Mainz means you get your choice of spots as well because many people do not board until later (there isn't much to see for about an hour). After Koblenz there isn't very much to see so it might not be worth going past that location.

You can bring luggage onto the boat. On the lowest level below the steps there is luggage storage but it isn't locked so use at your own risk. You cannot bring luggage into the dining room but you can bring it to the very top deck if you don't want to leave it unattended. There is some small snacks available on the top deck, and the food in the dining room is good but can be expensive for some items. The dining room (even when it's not busy) can take quite a bit for you to get food at- it took my brother 40 minutes to get a bowl of pasta with the dining room only having about 7 tables with people at them.

If you want to make sure people don't jump in front of you to take pictures sit on the right side of the boat (leaving Mainz) along the railing as more is on the right then on the left.

“Great Rhine cruise”
Reviewed 21 August 2013

Took the boat at Mainz in early morning going downstream. Fortunately, got good seats before it got crowed a few stops downriver. Views of castles were spectacular. Snacks were available on board. Got off boat at Koblenz, had lunch and took train back to Mainz in time for evening meal. Could have taken some time ashore at a few of the small villages.
