Primary reason for travelling to Cologne was to experience the Christmas markets – well worth the visit. Wanted a hotel near the centre but quiet. Stayed at the Hotel Buchholz for two nights. Delivered against all expectations – even managed to park outside the hotel for two days without a ticket! Welcome at the hotel was just right after a long drive – a glass of hot Gluhwein. Room was compact but more than adequate for our needs, being out and about every day. Bearing in mind the location and cost, this is a great place to stay in Cologne. The overall service and owner’s friendliness and advice make this hotel more than the sum of its parts. Unless looking for 5-star opulence, I would recommend the Buchholz to friends and family for a city-break. Will definitely return to Cologne which is a wonderful city.

As has been said, this Hotel is located less than a 10 minute walk to the east of the Hauptbanhof, I say 'less than 10 minutes' as we walk quickly ! The Hotel is set in a quiet residential road, opposite a modern office block and is a plesant old building. The rooms are of very good size, clean and tidy, with VERY comfortable beds and good selection of both soft and firm pillows. The breakfast is of excellent quality and you will be served a selection of ham and cheese as well as making your own selection of jams, fruit etc. The Hotel score very highly for the warm welcome and helpful, friendly satff, especially the lads on reception, who are a mine of information. There are a wide range of snck bars and restaurants on your route to/from the Dom/Old Town and you could have a nice meal there and then go into Cologne for a few beers if you did not fancy queuing for a table at busy times ! Tip, if you are going to use the tube/buses a lot one day, then invest in the 10.70 Euro all day ticket, this is valid for 5 adults and I think 2 children so with a 2.50 Euro fare to the airport and 1.70 Euro fare for a short hop, it does make for very good value.

To my surprise, Hotel Buchholz is located within a 10 minute walk of the Dom Cathedral as well as the train station, which is adjacent to the station.
I enjoyed my stay at the hotel very much. Yes, the elevator is small (but at least there is an elevator!) and the rooms and bathrooms are small too. Actually the rooms are sparcely decorated, just the necessities. So do not come here if you are expecting the Ritz! But then the price is not a Ritz price either: only 79 Euros.
That price includes the best breakfest I have ever had at a hotel: fresh jams, juices, cereals, meats ( fresh salmon on 2 occasions) fruit, eggs, you name it.
And what I like the very best is the amazing service and friendliness of all the staff. They were very nice and very helpful. Next year I am coming back to Cologne and to this hotel for sure.

We very much enjoyed our 2 week stay at Hotel Buchholz. From the moment we arrived at this 18 room hotel, we felt like important guests, accomodated whenever possible by the friendly owners and staff, who seem to be genuinely interested in their guests. They nearly always take the time for a bit of pleasant conversation. Our double room was small, but cozy and very clean. The beds were comfortable and the room was very quiet. We looked forward to starting each day in the sunny breakfast room, with its varied and delicious choices - meats, cheeses, breads, fruit, cereals, juices, eggs and a different dessert each day!
The hotel is just 3 blocks from the main train station and walking distance (for strong walkers) to the Dom and Schildergasse for great shopping. There are a couple of quaint restaurants with good food close by. Room rates are very competitive for a 3 star hotel and I will definitely be booking at Hotel Buchholz for my next trip to Cologne. If you appreciate many qualities of a bed and breakfast, you will probably enjoy this hotel as much as I did.

I visited Cologne for the first time for a conference and booked Hotel Buchholz for two nights. The hotel is within a short walking distance from the city centre, and the Expo centre, and the hotel is generally in a good spot just one block from the river.

The hotel is small and cozy and the staff are very friendly and helpful. I had booked a single room, which was small as expected. The shower/toilet was very small also however the towels and bathroom was very clean, as was the room and the entire hotel for that matter.

Really the only downside for me was the lack of a proper table and chair for late night work. The wifi was also a bit slow for my liking so I couldn't really do much work in the room. There are plenty of hotspot locations around Cologne so you can go to a cafe and work from there if your hotel is not equiped for online professionals.

Cute little find in Downtown Koln...family owned and operated...cozy rooms and great breakfast. Small sized bathrooms...but it's about the location...nice spot...

The hotel is next to some large construction of office buildings that are across the street...but don't let that stop you. The owner and her son were so accomodating...

A small hotel a very short walk from the railway station offering a particularly warm reception and old fashioned Welsh hospitality from the matriarch of the house. Smallish rooms. For us, the breakfasts were a particular strength and the free internet access was an unexpected but very welcome bonus.
