Welcoming, friendly, trusting, courteous, helpful, multi-lingual staff throughout- why do so many hotels often with far more grandiose aspirations find it difficult to instill in their staff that a smile will go a long way in helping good customer relations? If the folk here say can I help you then you know they will mean it.
The hotel is extremely convenient for the station and the city centre, yet remarkably quiet for such a central pitch, especially bearing in mind the ongoing roadworks around the station. We had a double room on the second floor at the back and could hear virtually nothing from outside in the night, sleeping with the window open, other than the odd, comforting, low rumble of a train or two in the distance. No problem with getting a good night's sleep.
Our room was spotless and well appointed for this level, including a TV and compact, fully equipped en suite. The latter could perhaps be a little too intimate for those prone to embarrassment from shall we say "bathroom noises", although my wife and I now have few secrets to keep from each other. Then again if you want pampering in 5 star luxury you will stay somewhere else and doubtless pay through the nose for it.
As others have said the breakfast was tremendous value, and available from 0700 to 1000, so there was no need to rush for fear of missing it. It started with immaculate presentation in the spotless dining room- an individual pot of what you want ( tea, coffee or, especially welcome in my case, decaff) with more available on request if required, a boiled egg, then help yourself, and take as long as you like, to whatever you want from a selection of cold meats, cheeses, a variety of breads, fruits, yogurt, cake; much, much better than some of the other "one belch and you are empty" continental breakfasts we have sometimes seen in other establishments.
The reception appears to be manned 24 hours ( good for security- press the buzzer for access). Although we did not stay out THAT late, this was a comfort. No fumbling around for keys necessary after a glass or three of the local kolsch!
We were not leaving Koln for a few hours after checking out, but it was no problem at all to leave our bags for safekeeping whilst we had another turn around the sights and attractions of this lovely, friendly city.
Thank you to all at the Brandenburger Hof. We would have no hesitation at all in coming back again another time.

I travelled alone to Cologne and stayed at Brandenburger Hof for 1 night.

This is a family owned hotel and I feel very welcome and safe. The location is very good, near the main DB station and all the attractions within Cologne are within walking distance from the hotel. The owners are can speak very good English and they are all very friendly and helpful.

I booked a single room with shared bathroom for €40/night. My room is located on the second floor, the hotel do not have a lift, so you will have to carry your luggage up, but the owner is very good to help me with my luggage. My room had a single bed, a wardrobe, a small TV on a desk, a sink and a hairdryer. The bed is very clean & comfortable. The room is pretty spacious and although there is no air-con installed, you will still feel very cold at night.

The breakfast is excellent. The spread includes all sorts of breads, jams, ham, cheese, orange juice, tea, crackers and even a hard-boiled egg cooked to perfection. I was rushing for my train to Paris; wish I could have more time to enjoy my breakfast!

I would definitely return to this hotel and recommend it to my friends!

Having stayed at this hotel about twice a year for very many years, we thought it was time we told everyone how good it is. The rooms are small, but the facilities are good, and the prices very competitive indeed. The best aspects of this hotel include the fact that although very close to the DB station, it is far enough away to be very quiet at night.

I think the main reason we go there however is the amazingly friendly welcome that we always receive. I would recommend this hotel for anyone looking for somewhere to stay in Cologne that is central, good value, and has probably the best breakfast in town.

I traveled in June with a family group of 7. We spent our first night in Cologne after flying in to Frankfurt (took the train, 45 min). We stayed at the Brandenburger Hof and were well pleased.

1. We could walk to the hotel from the train station with our luggage. Not the most scenic walk--road work is being done and you wal around/through it. But hotel is only a couple blocks away. It's a quiet area--that means no bars close for a night-cap, unless you don't mind smoke. (Minor disadvantage)

2. Friendly staff. Pleasant clean rooms, with ensuite baths. I had a single room and it was charming.

3. We walked back through the station to the cathedral/Dom plaza and then had dinner at Fruh. We enjoyed it. Not our favorite type of food, but the kolsch beer was delicious, the waiter entertaining, and the room amospheric. It was a nice start to our trip.

4. Afterward we walked about, saw the Dom, down to the river, through some of the smaller street. A very pleasant way to wind up our first day.

5. Breakfast the next morning at the hotel (included) was delicious. Meats, cheese, fruit, soft-boiled eggs, coffe or tea. They evenserved us at 6 am (1 hr early), as we had an early train to catch.

6. I paid only 55 euros for all this as a single--price per person in doubles was even less.

The week I travelled to Cologne there was a trade fair on, so all hotels put up their prices and this was one of the cheapest I could find that was actually available, though 120€ per night wasn't that cheap. Positives: breakfast was very nice and if you are in the hotel during the day they offer you coffee, tea etc.

Negatives: main issue was that it really wasn't good value for money. The room was clean, but small, not nicely fitted out and no space to work. This would not have been an issue if the room was about 60€... but it wasn't.. it was 120€ per night. Another issue is that the area around is a bit dodgy: for example, whilst waiting in the reception area I overheard someone come in and ask if they could rent a room for 2-3 hours......

Stayed with friends and family for 2 nights . hotel is small and basic but offers great value . The friendly and helpful owner gets all the basics right The rooms are a good size , showers are ok and bed hardish but not too bad . breakfast is very good especially for the price. I would reccomend this hotel especially as its central and in a quiet road

Just returned from a couple of nights in the Brandenburger Hof in Cologne. The hotel staff was great, very helpful and very friendly. The location of the hotel was just opposite the main trainstation and approx. 5minutes walk to the Dom and shopping street. We even got a private parking space. The parking I think is limited so ask before you go to ensure there is one. There are multistorey carpark nearby though. The room was simple but had everything you need - comfy beds, en suite and very clean. The breakfast was georgeous! When you come down you get your freshly boiled egg! There is a big choice of continental food and lots of it! And the price for all this compared to other smaller cities we've been in Germany is nothing to complain about! If you look for good location for a reasonable price, then this is the hotel for you.
