“Affordable accommodation in excellent location”
Reviewed 27 May 2014

I stayed at the Astor for one night. The hotel is conveniently located close to the best shopping in town. The cathedral is also conveniently close.
The reception staff was very attentive and able to help me in English. The rate also included free wifi and breakfast. Breakfast was a good mix of continental and hot food.
I specifically requested a room at the back as this is away from the street, and this was no problem at all.
The room was decently sized with cable tv and a nice bathroom. All basic amenities were provided.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back are less noisy.

The setup in this hotel was quirky verging on weird. We had a self-contained duplex apartment which was in another building, about 3 doors up the street from reception. We had our own key to come and go as we pleased but the lift opened up right into our bedroom which felt maybe a little odd; apparently the key meant that only we could access that floor but even still it seemed pretty unusual. Our second floor had a small lounge and kitchen which might have been great if we were staying for longer than a weekend and/or determined to self-cater but we weren't in either case so it just seemed a little wasted; there was also access to a flat roof outside but the views of rooftops over Cologne is not exactly scenic. The breakfasts (served in the main hotel) were decent enough and the location was certainly very central (between the train station and the main shopping areas). The staff on reception, well one lady in particular, were a little cold and officious but not unhelpful. So all in all, nothing bad really but just be prepared for the oddness.

Room Tip: Some of the apartments have a bit of an odd setup so just check exactly what it is that you're g...

The Astor is a nice hotel however make sure and ask for a room in the back of the building. These rooms are new and much bigger than those in the main building. To get to these rooms you have to walk through the breakfast room and take the stairs. I was shocked that the room I was first given in the main building was so small that I was wondering how they managed to fit a bed in there. I immediately asked for another room and I was given one in the back which was perfect. The wifi works extremely well. I also gave the Sauna a try which was great after a long day at work.

The breakfast is really excellent. Freshly squeezed orange juice, scrambled eggs, bacon and sausage. I would certainly recommend this hotel.

I booked this hotel for an 8 night stay, and thoroughly enjoyed the place. It is small, boutique, and very nicely located in the Altstadt area, walking distance to the Dom. Great local shopping and some wonderful local eateries topped it off.

To say that the staff at this hotel are wonderful would be an understatement. Nothing was a problem and the way the various staff engaged with me was fantastic. There was a problem with in room internet (which is free) and they had a technician out in a flash to fix.

Great breakfast every morning in the restaurant downstairs, with lots of variety. I stayed in the top level room which was large and very comfortable.

I would stay at this hotel again in a heartbeat.

We had a great stay here. The room (#112) was a big double-bedded room, all mod cons, really plush en-suite, really powerful shower. Everything was exceptionally clean as well. We had the best nights sleep we've had for ages, even though the room overlooked the main street, as the bed was so comfortable. Breakfast selection was amazing, cereal, fresh fruit, yoghurts, breads, cakes, meat/cheese, and scrambled/boiled eggs, sausages and bacon and more.... Brilliant. Staff were really helpful. Michaela was the receptionist we dealt with the most, and nothing was too much trouble for her. As we were leaving early in the morning, before breakfast, she ordered us a packed lunch, free of charge, for the next day, and also printed me off details of the U Bahn/S Bahn trains needed to get us to the airport on time. She wasn't alone, all the staff were superb. When we go to Cologne again, we will definitely return here, no question. 15 minutes to walk to centre of Cologne, all Christmas markets are also close by, so a great location.

I spent one night here in October. It is located approx 15 minute walk from the Cathedral and close to two train stations. It is also close to Rudolhplatz tram station.
The hotel itself is very clean. I was very happy with the room as it had flat screen tv, tea and coffee making facilities and the bathroom was well stock up. The staff were also very friendly.
I think the hotel offered good value for money and would recommend it no problem.
I did not have breakfast there, so I cannot comment.
