I really liked this hotel. It's close to the train station, only a 15 min walk which is good if you speak little German, have just arrived in cologne and haven't figured out the buses/trains.

The reception staff were friendly and welcoming. The room (4th floor facing the street) was clean and quire luxurious. Free bottle of water in the room, flat screen TV. You can get free wifi codes from reception. Price includes breakfast - which was pretty damn good. Great coffee, lots of options (cereal, Bircher porridge, bread, sweet pastries, sausage, eggs, bacon, mixture fruits, cheeses, hams, juices).

I was really impressed until bedtime, the only downer. Being in a room facing the street. Crikey does it get noisy. Stereo music, chat, etc. Not so bad if you kept the windows closed but as there's no air con, the room gets really hot so you need the ventilation. I think the problem is because the windows protrude into the street like an arrow tip so bringing more noise into the room.

So Astor, either sort out air con for the summer or maybe sound proof the rooms more and you've got an awesome hotel! Or alternatively ask for a room not facing the street. Or stay out partying the night away and return when pubs close!

I would definitely recommend this hotel otherwise!

I stayed at the Astor for one night. The hotel is conveniently located close to the best shopping in town. The cathedral is also conveniently close.
The reception staff was very attentive and able to help me in English. The rate also included free wifi and breakfast. Breakfast was a good mix of continental and hot food.
I specifically requested a room at the back as this is away from the street, and this was no problem at all.
The room was decently sized with cable tv and a nice bathroom. All basic amenities were provided.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back are less noisy.

The setup in this hotel was quirky verging on weird. We had a self-contained duplex apartment which was in another building, about 3 doors up the street from reception. We had our own key to come and go as we pleased but the lift opened up right into our bedroom which felt maybe a little odd; apparently the key meant that only we could access that floor but even still it seemed pretty unusual. Our second floor had a small lounge and kitchen which might have been great if we were staying for longer than a weekend and/or determined to self-cater but we weren't in either case so it just seemed a little wasted; there was also access to a flat roof outside but the views of rooftops over Cologne is not exactly scenic. The breakfasts (served in the main hotel) were decent enough and the location was certainly very central (between the train station and the main shopping areas). The staff on reception, well one lady in particular, were a little cold and officious but not unhelpful. So all in all, nothing bad really but just be prepared for the oddness.

Room Tip: Some of the apartments have a bit of an odd setup so just check exactly what it is that you're getting

The Astor is a nice hotel however make sure and ask for a room in the back of the building. These rooms are new and much bigger than those in the main building. To get to these rooms you have to walk through the breakfast room and take the stairs. I was shocked that the room I was first given in the main building was so small that I was wondering how they managed to fit a bed in there. I immediately asked for another room and I was given one in the back which was perfect. The wifi works extremely well. I also gave the Sauna a try which was great after a long day at work.

The breakfast is really excellent. Freshly squeezed orange juice, scrambled eggs, bacon and sausage. I would certainly recommend this hotel.

Very nice location, excellent personnel, facilities very well maintained, clean, warm, very good breakfast. You need nothing more! Very close to the Hotel, there was restaurants, sushi bar, cafe, everything was very close. and just 15 minutes walking from DOM. Just 2 metro stations.

Room Tip: Room on the roof of the building are excellent and have a nice view to DOM! Very romantic rooms, even I was visiting Cologne for business purposes.
