Hotel Heinzelmannchen

Well, the hotel is, in my reckoning, not that bad as the previous reviews seem to portray it. It is fully functional family-run establishment. Rooms are of a decent size with high ceilings and warm in cold weather. The bathroom is tiny indeed and has an unfortunate layout. They do not have real double beds, just two single ones pushed together, but that's normal in Germany. The breakfast was not up to German standards, poor selection and not the best cheese and sausage.

What struck us most was the way the room was decorated. We located no fewer than a dozen electric outlets lined up on the wall just about our bed (see pictures). Then we were astonished to see a huge garden frog on top of the cupboard. Finally, as we lay down, we saw a plant hung on the ceiling next to the lamp. Truly bizzarre!

All things considered, at 75 euros a night the hotel was too expensive for what it had to offer. If you can get a lower price, in the range of 50 to 60 euros, it should be fine.

Hi,

Heinzelmännchen is centrally located and serves a decent German breakfast. I have stayed a few times in the past 2 years or so and liked the place. It is not great but serves it's purpose if you are after a reasonably priced accommodation in down town Cologne and appreciate curtains and bed linen in bright colors and a flowery design.

However, I seems like they have changed management. The receptionist was extremely unfriendly and unwelcoming. They also now demand payment in advance. He refused my credit card saying that according to the "system" my card was not available. I checked the card only minutes later and it worked fine. If stay at that place yo better pay cash.

This was close to the end of my Germany trip as it was my 2nd last stop, with the last being Frankfurt.
Rooms was clean and the service staff was friendly and understood English.
No lift, just the stairs leading up to the rooms.
Breakfast was provided. Supermarket located 2 streets away which was open, if I remembered accurately was 24hrs.
Do visit the cologne cathedral, tower and treasury. Be mindful, its a steep climb up to the top.
I walked to the HBF to take my train to Frankfurt upon checkout, the walk took approx 20 mins with full arsenal, i.e backpack plus a small knapsack.

+ Well located for the centre and south of the city. Anywhere north of the cathedral would be too far from the hotel, though.

+ Clean, comfortable, simple, doesn't pretend to be anything it isn't.

+/- Uninteresting (but adequate) breakfast.

- No carpet, though this is not unreasonable for a 2* hotel.

- Rather dated.
