“Movies only in German!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 May 2013

Having read all the fascinating reviews on this place, we decided it was a must to visit during our weekend in Cologne. Needless to say how disappointed we were to find out that the movies there are only in German, not even with subtitles. Unfortunately, there was no review on Trip advisor to point this important detail, so I decided to be the first one to alert those non-German speaking tourists in case ey want to visit.

“Cinema at its best!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 January 2013

We went there and loved it! We watched a movie in the "Club Cinema" and it was great.
First of all the staff it really friendly and helpful, whomever you mask ask something. For a nice start you get a little welcome drink and then you can order some little snacks and drinks as you wish when you are at your seat. They are delivered quite fast; although not being delivered until beginning of the movie because the order was taken a little late, but they almost did so.

The Club Cinema was just perfect, comfy seats and lots of space! We liked sitting in row 2 very much, too far in the back would not be ours. Depending on the row you might have little footstool as well. The seats here do not recline but this is no minus at all.

After the movie we went to see the other cinemas and again the staff was very polite and even explaining some things about the seats. In the big one, e.g. the seats all do recline, I think they do so in number 2 as well. And here again you might have footstools, depending on the row.
And you can choose (when buying the ticket you can see it) to have a double seat with your partner.

The one and only demerit was the checkroom. When we came it was full already but we were not too sad because when we left the waiting line was quite long (up to the entrance.) So might need some improvement.

But we will be there again, that's for sure!

“at last - a luxurious movie theatre for grownups in Cologne!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 September 2012

We'd heard about this special movie theatre when it opened back in March in the renovated building of a old movie house but somehow never found the time to try it out. After going to the local mulitplex a few weeks ago (the first time in a couple of years) and being disgusted by the price (not cheap, cash payment only), the filthy conditions, the expensive inedible popcorn, unfriendly service, and the very many long commercials before the movie started, I swore I'd never go back to the movies. My husband is a movie buff, though, so we decided to finally try out the old Residenz in Cologne, now back in business as the Astor Film Lounge.

And I think we'll now be going regularly to the movies. We could easily choose and reserve our seats online and pay by credit card. We arrived early enough to have a look at the elegant foyer and sip our complimentary delicious "welcome" drinks. Then we were shown to our seats in the beautifully restored Kino 2. We sank into fantastic leather arm chairs with foot stools. Usually the ads annoy me, but the ones here were shorter and the sound and visual quality superb. We were able to order during the commercials - great ice cream and chips delivered right to our seats. I didn't even miss the popcorn and look forward to trying out some of the other treats on the menu like fresh vegetables with dip or delicious looking cakes and maybe even splurge on champagne next time - there's enough room on the little tables on either side of the seats for glasses and plates.

We really enjoyed the film itself (Intouchables / Ziemlich gute Freunde), but I'd be willing to watch almost anything in such comfortable surroundings. We noticed that not only movies but also live performances from the Met and from the Bolshoi are planned. Of course the tickets are somewhat more expensive, but I'm willing to pay more to be able to enjoy going to the movies again. While doing a bit of research online, I see that the Astor Film Lounges are part of a small chain with movie theatres in Berlin and Munich.

We'll be back now that going to the movies in Cologne has become something really special.
