Park Hotel St. George

Having won flights and tickets for the final of the Eurovision Song Contest in Dusseldorf, we struggled to find reasonably priced accommodation within striking distance. This hotel was about thirty miles from Dusseldorf, but reasonably priced, given the huge hike in prices at the time, and close to the motorway system. There is hotel parking for a small charge and plenty of free parking nearby. The surrounding area is residential and there is a small Aldi supermarket in front of the hotel.

This hotel gives off a somewhat tired and elderly appearance from the outside, but our room had been refurbished and was perfectly adequate. Fresh fruit and chocolate had been provided in the room which was a nice touch.

Reception was quite casual and they had to send for someone who could speak English. Well, we were in Gemany and neither of us could remember more than a few words of Geman, so fair enough. We were then issued with our room key without anyone checking if the room was ready, which of course it wasn't. We climbed two flights of stairs to find this out as there was no lift. There was also a very friendly Great Dane in reception who greeted us when we arrived.

The hotel is right next to the tram terminus with a frequent, reasonably priced service into the centre of Cologne for sightseeing.

Buffet breakfast was included in the price and there was a good selection of hot and cold food. We did not use the hotel bar but it did appear to be still open when we returned to the hotel at around 2 am on the Sunday morning.

The room was small, but the bathroom was large. The windows were single pane so you could hear every sound. You would think it would be quiet in the woods, right? Wrong! The streetcar turns around right by the hotel, so all night every 15 minutes you hear the screeching of the rails. The place smelled very strongly of cigarette smoke, and there was a light on the balcony that shine thru the paper thin curtains all night. Bed was very uncomfortable. Only poor hotel we stayed in on our entire two week trip.

Room Tip: Get as far away from streetcar tracks as possible

we have just returned from a 10 day working/holiday and stayed at the park hotel
we had a great time here, we got a really good deal for bed and breakfast, the rooms are clean and roomy with cleaners on hand daily if you require them. the management and staff were brilliant and friendly not forgetting rocky the dog.
just outside the hotel there was the tram that takes you into the centre of cologne 9 euro for 2 people return. alternatively for up to 5 people you can get a 24 hour pass anywhere throughout cologne for 10 euros 20 cents. fab value.
the city is well worth a few visits the cathedral is a must and if you like shopping you are in heaven. a few stops before the centre is KALK POST where if you like shopping there is lots there and you cant get lost.
the hotel has a varied menu that you can eat in bobbys bar restaurant which has a relaxed pub feel about it. but if you fancy a 10 minute walk up the main road you will come to the rather hof where the food is reasonably priced and plentiful and the staff are helpful and friendly (worth a visit or 2).
all in all if you like local friendly people with amenities close at hand then this is the place for you. we are already making plans to go back next january to the park hotel purely because of the hospitality and freindliness of the people in the hotel and local areas

We stayed for 4 nights, 200 metres away is the tram stop which with one change will take you into Koln. a further 5 mtrs is the Schwalbennest Restaurant which serves very good food during the day. Aldi is next door. 8 kms away is Porz you can sit at the side of the Rhine. The Sidemotel is ideal for disabled people as was my friend, 20 mtrs away from the Hotel Main Entrance. And you are almost in the Forest. All in all a very enjoyable stay and I would certainly recommend it. Oh - and you're just 500 mtrs away from the A3 Motorway. Great!

I stayed at this hotel for one night in Summer 2009. I'm writing this review now as a way to return the favour of consulting reviews of other hotels while planning future travel.

This hotel is not small but it seems a family enterprise. I arrived late and was greeted by a huge dog, and the owners/managers sitting in the adjacent bar/resto. They were charming and quickly got me into the spartan, small but functional and clean room. (I had previously booked on expedia.) For a rural/suburban setting, parking is bizarrely in an underground garage. I can't recall if I paid extra for it.

I wanted a simple, clean, inexpensive place to sleep with few hassles - and that's what I got. The greeting dog and the charm were an added bonus.

The St. George is a reasonably maintained hotel with small but clean rooms, which are furnished rather cheaply (Ikea?). The bed is fine (2 mattresses) and there's a tv with mainly German channels.
The single-pane window lets noise in from the road outside, which was made worse by the lack of adequate curtains. For some unknown reason, the hotel has chosen see-through curtains which might as well be absent, so get ready for an early and sunny start!
The bathroom is tiny and lacks shampoo, etc. (just hand wash). A hairdryer is available though.
Breakfast was more than adequate and the personnel is kind but casual. Wireless Internet is available at a cost.
If it's just for the night, it's not a bad place to stay; unless you want to sleep late of course.
