“Great location, awesome breakfast!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 March 2014

I spent 4 nights in this hotel. The location is very good, near the Hauptbahnhof, but on the opposite side to the Dom. The staff is very friendly, and they help you with anything you need. The room was clean and ok. The breakfast was superb, a lot of options, and of good quality. Wifi worked good too, although you need a ticket that you need to ask every day (for free).

We stayed on night in this hotel and where very satisfied. We had to check in at another hotel just down the street.

The place is located just around the corner from the main train station, and not fare from the city center.

After a very long train journey we finally arrived late to Hotel Domstern. The man on reception could not have been more helpful. Tired and hungry, the welcome cake and chocolate waiting for us in our room was much appreciated. He also recommended a super bar/restaurant for dinner that evening. Breakfast was really good, with a varied selection on offer. It's only a small thing but they know how to make a proper cup of tea, which was lovely. We will definitely stay in this small, personal hotel the next time we visit Cologne.

Stayed in the hotel for our 30 wedding anniversary, and our first visit to the Christmas markets. The hotel staff was so helpful, I can't praise them enough. Breakfast was lovely and we will definitely return there. The hotel is located near to colognes main rail station. You walk through the station and cologne cathedral is right in front of you, and is so easy to get around

Hotel is a 5 minutes walk from Koln's railway station, in a district with plenty of hotels but very quite. It is therefore also very close to the Dom and to the historical dowtown, in a perfect location. It's a small hotel of less than 20 rooms, which are not very big but modern and cozy. Breakfast is a big buffet with many different choices. Everything was good, with typical German food and also more classical food. Staff is very nice and helpful. We stayed 2 nights there and really enjoyed it. I warmly recommend this hotel.

Like a previous reviewer I also research the hotels I wish to stay at when taking a vacation. The Domstern fitted the bill. On arrival I was informed that we were NOT booked into the Domstern but had been passed on to the DomSpitzen, part of the same chain. If I book a hotel I do not expect to be then told I have no room at that hotel and arrangements have been made for me to move hotels. If there was no room at the Domstern when I booked or if it was found out BEFORE my arrival why was I not told this, they had all my contact details, then I could have judged for myself whether I wished to go to the DomSpitzen or make alternative arrangements. Was I moved out because a person indigenous to Germany wanted a room even booking after me, who's to say as it appears that only non-germans appear to have been moved. I would like to know how many people who booked after me for the same period actually received rooms at the Domstern. On being shuffled off there was not even the hint of an apology.
It appears that this is a regular occurrence for the Domstern as reviewers can see from previous reviews.
If you actually want to stay at this hotel roll a dice you may be lucky.

This is the second time we have stayed in this hotel - last time was five years ago when our sons were younger and we stayed in a family room. This time, since our sons are teenagers, we decided to book two rooms. A twin for the boys and a double for us. The boys room was okay but ours was great. Lots of room and cupboard space so you could definitely spend quite a few days here although we stayed just two nights to visit the Christmas markets dotted around Cologne. Booking on-line was easy and the staff spoke English very well so us lazy British have no problem. The staff were also very friendly, giving us chocolate when we arrived (we arrived early but this didn't faze them) and leaving cake in the room. Breakfast is European buffet in style but we were offered fried or scrambled eggs and there was sausages on the buffet table so you could almost get a fried breakfast if you really want it.
The hotel is five minutes walk from the cathedral and one of the most popular markets and railway station so locate is perfect.
I would definitely stay here again if we return to Cologne and recommend it to anyone looking for a good low cost hotel in the city.
