“Very pleasant hotel and excelent location”
Reviewed 5 November 2009

Pleasant hotel, very clean and well kept but in a simple style. The location is superb and the staff extremely efficient and helpful. The breakfast is very good. Excelent quality/price ratio.
Single less positive aspect: my room was very small.

Dear Isabel,

thank you for your valued feedback, we are glad, that you had a nice stay here with us at Domstern hotel.
I have already written about room size in previous replies and I can only repeat how glad I am if guests point out what to expect when staying with us!
Being on a top rank here at tripadvisor we sometimes get compared with the very best places Cologne has to offer! Of course this is a big honour, and we are so proud that our service is compared to those in 5 star hotels. But still Domstern is a 3 star venue and we see ourselves more like a bed and breakfast, we love to meet guests from all over the world and introduce them to the best places our city has to offer.
But we can not compare ourselves with 5 star places concerning amenities (no bath robes or in room movies here) and room space!
Our rooms and bathrooms are clean, well kept but yes: small!
Please check on our homepage if our house or the requested room category is right for you.
Consider an upgrade (double room for single use, triple or Suite) if you plan to spend a lot of time in your room for example if you are here to work!
Our aim is to satisfy our customers and we definitely do not want you to leave us disappointed!
If you decide Domstern is right for you we will do our very best to make your stay memorable! That`s our promise, and Isabel- we are really glad that your impression of our house was so favourable at last!

Thank you from your hosts
Michael & Manfred

My wife and I along with her sister stayed the 3 days of Sept. 30 through Oct. 2 in the junior suite, which we found an outstanding value (we payed a total of 446 EUR for the 3 nights). Not only was the room cozy and comfortable, with a king and full-size pull out sofa bed, but the bath was very luxe with a lovely tub and separate glass-stalled shower. Moreover it had a window which you could open fully, a distinct plus in my estimation. The included breakfast was certainly ample with fresh ingredients served buffet style. Michael and his crew are most accommodating and a fount of local information. Keep in mind this centrally located hotel is quite small and geared for the leisure traveler. While Cologne is way down the list of my favorite German cities, I would likely stay her again under similar circumstances, but only if the suite was available.

Dear Herbert,

thank you very much for writing a short feedback after your stay! Of course we are very happy to hear that you had a great stay together with your family in Cologne!
Here at Domstern hotel we see our place more like a bed and breakfast, where you are always welcome to talk with your hosts and ask for suggestions and assistance. What many guests are looking for is a little help when exploring the city.
So we do our best to recommend the right places, sights and restaurants to make your stay as pleasant as possible.
And to get such terrific feedback of course makes us very proud and happy!
We say thank you very much for staying with us,
your hosts
Michael & Manfred

P.S. You are certainly right that the Junior Suite is the nicest room we have to offer, but we think that if you stay for a few days and will spend more time in the city than in your room you will also have a great and comfortable stay in one of our regular doubles!

Hotel Domstern is only five minutes walk from the train station and the Cathedral but the location itself is pretty quiet. You can be right in the centre of the city very quickly and there are also other bars and restaurants just 5 minutes up the road if you don't want to go into the city centre (ask the staff for a map showing local amenities).

Hotel itself is very clean, staff are extremely friendly and speak excellent English. Rooms are pleasant. Breakfast was inclusive with our stay and is a buffet style arrangement with bread, cheese, ham, cereals, yoghurt etc. Helps saves money as food and drink in Koln is quite expensive (though the local beer is delicious - it comes in small glasses which waiters will top up for you when you have finished).

Recommended and would definitely stay here again.

We selected the Domstern Hotel for our stay in Cologne based upon the reviews on this forum and were not disappointed. The hotel is conveniently located on a quiet side street a short 10 minute walk from the main train station and within walking distance to many popular sights, restaurants and shopping. As with any service oriented enterprise, what makes this hotel special is its friendly, courteous, and helpful staff. The directions they provided to reach the hotel from the train station were spot on and they were very helpful in assisting us in navigating the city. Their restaurant recommendations were excellent and they rendered assistance with train schedules (downloading and printing them from a computer) as we were planning a trip to another town. They even made phone calls in our behalf to check on several spas we were considering visiting.

Although the rooms are somewhat compact, we never felt cramped. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom was well supplied with your standard amenities and had a good shower. Housekeeping was always completed in a timely manner. There was ample closet space with an electronically controlled in-room safe. We found the room - and the hotel in general - to be very clean and well maintained.

The buffet style breakfast was very good and satisfying and consisted of your typical European fare of cold cuts, cheeses, breads, jellies/jams, cereal, fruit, yogurts, coffee/tea (even cappuccino), pastries and juice. It got you off to a very good start in the morning.

The only negative (and no fault of the hotel) is that there presently is a great deal of construction work being done between the train station and on the street the hotel is located. This in no way negatively impacted our stay but be advised that the street is basically a construction zone as it appears they are installing new sewer lines.

The Domstern Hotel is easy to recommend to anyone who is seeking a very clean, comfortable hotel coupled with good amenities and an exceptional staff. Garnering a great daily rate as we did directly from their internet web page only adds to the positives of this hotel.

I stayed here for a week on a business trip with my girlfriend and mother. The location was excellent. I won't lie the 3-5 minute walk to the train station (where you get a train straight to the convention center on platform 10) smelled a little like pee, but many parts of Germany smell like that. Too much good beer, not enough public latrines.
We had a double room and although it was a cozy room, I didn't feel too cramped and I felt more than compensated by the magnificant bathroom, with a huge tub.
Every morning they served a breakfast buffet with boiled eggs, nice cheeses, cereals a wide variety of breads, vegetables, yogourt and spectacular coffee, etc, etc...
The best thing about this hotel though is the staff, I suspect that the owners work there regularly, they're super friendly and helpful guys who produce there own newsletter every morning and night after night pointed us in the direction of unfailingly delicious restaurants, all within a short walking distance of the hotel (if you go, ask about restaurant Confucious). I left an uneeded set of keys for a lock that my girlfriend and I planted on the bridge (a funny Cologne tradition), and they emailed me to ask whether they should mail them to me, in Canada.
This might sound like too nice of a review to be true, but I am definately going to stay here again next year when I return for the convention.
Did I mention the bathtub was awsome?

Hotel Domstern is overpriced and feels like a student dorm. The room I was in was very small (about 6 ft. by 6 ft.). The bathroom smelled like someone had smoked two or three packs of cigarettes in it. Also, the shower did not drain properly. Moreover, the hotel is located behind the train station near a lot of construction--a bit dodgy and unpleasant to say the least. Finally, when I checked out early after staying only one night--due to all of the above-mentioned reasons--the hotel manager had the balls to charge me for a second day. A much better hotel can be found that offers similar rates.

Dear Sheva,

wow thats really something new for us!
We often get feedback what we can improve in our house and we are very grateful for that information.
Being named a "crap hotel" however makes us a little speechless and perplexed, although you made it very clear to us already during your stay, that you disliked our house and your room!
We fully understand that Domstern is not perfect for everyone and we are deeply sorry that we could not satisfy your expectations!
That`s why we did our best to find another solution and even checked several other hotels in the city that might possibly have room for you- due to a trade fair this was rather difficult- especially concerning the high room rates!
However you found an alternative place on your own, and we did not charge any cancellation fee for your actually "non refundable trade fair package rate".
You are right though that we charged 50% of your second night as your check out was after 6pm, without letting us know before and we were not able to resell the room that day!
-Concerning the room size you are definitely right, our singles are around 110 sq ft. they are newly renovated and clean. We are sorry that you had a "dorm feeling" in there, but unfortunately being in the very city center definitely limits us concerning available space.
- After your complaint concerning the shower drain, we found out that it had been closed by accident or maybe carelessness. So we were able to fix it by just opening the drain again.
-The construction work around the station makes it sometimes difficult to find Domstrasse at first, although there are alternative ways to the city center which we will gladly show you upon arrival!
Hopefully the works above ground should be almost complete by the end of the year! In addition there are works in the seewer tunnels in the neighbourhood which should be completed by October.
So it will definitely be easier to navigate the surroundings and the work at the station will not disturb you as Domstern is far enough that it can not be heard!
-Domstrasse by the way is a residential area, very quiet and absolutely safe, even during the night, we live just nearby ourselves and can guarantee it is not "dodgy" at all!

We are deeply sorry that you disliked your stay, and once again we apologise for the inconveniences.
What we can achieve from your feedback is that maybe we have to make it even clearer what we can accomplish as a 3 star venue and what our guests can expect or what is beyond our possibilities!
regards from Cologne
your hosts
Michael & Manfred
