We were there for 6 nights for Karnival in Cologne. This was our second stay at the Marriott but at least our 20th time in Cologne in the past 20 years and our 6th Karnival. The hotel is just north of the Hbf but in a quiet neighborhood, even during the crazy Karnival time.

We had a large room on the Executive Floor, overlooking the hotel entrance. We were in the "new" section of the hotel, these rooms only have a shower, no tub. The three large windows all opened and you could see the Dom outside to the left.

We had access to the Executive lounge. Our rate included breakfast which we had in the restaurant. But they serve a light breakfast in the lounge plus a mid-afternoon snack plus light food in the evenings. We didn't eat out once in the evenings, the evening food with wine and then the desert was sufficient. The lounge has jars of cookies and candies out most of the day. There is complementary beer, soda, juice, coffee, tea, etc., in the lounge.

The lounge has one free computer for internet access (which was really slow) and a terminal with faster paid access. I used the in-room internet access for one day which cost 12 Euro for 24 hours.

If you walk west one block from the hotel and then head north you will find three grocery stores, all sorts of shops, apartment buildings, etc., typical of the many Cologne neighborhoods.

Others have mentioned the staff. The hotel front desk are fairly young and are probably working their way through the Marriott organization and the German hotel/restaurant professional training scheme. I have found that they are generally helpful and try to please the guests.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the deluxe rooms.

The hotel is very close to the Cologne Hauptbahnhof (or Central Station), located just North of the train station and the Dom. If you're arriving by train, follow signs for the Four Points Hotel; just ensure you're not exiting through the Dom exit (which is the opposite way). In fact, heading to the Four Points Hotel is exactly how you want to walk, and continue on Johannisstrasse for about a quick 5 minute walk (200m).

I was hoping I could write a review about how cordial and welcoming the hotel staff were upon arrival into Cologne, but that's not the story I can honestly write. Upon check-in we were told that our room had been assigned, and was ready for us to occupy. Asking for an upgrade (as my partner is a Marriott Platinum member, and one reason we chose Marriott vs other brands on our European trip) was met with near disgust, and we were coldly told, "You were given the best available room in the category you booked."

On the way to our room, we wanted to take some pictures of the flowers in the lobby, so that we can provide some pictures along with this review; however, we were reprimanded and told we were not allowed to take photos in the lobby. This is a major point of frustration on my partner's part, as there are no signs indicating guests could not take photos, and one would think that tourists on vacation would be allowed to take photos of their experience. Please keep this in mind in case you attempt to photograph the lobby area.

We visited Cologne for a short visit with a package deal that included Breakfast and a 20 Euro voucher each night for use in their bar or restaurant. We were given room 108. Room 108 was a nice room, albeit a bit small at 269 square feet. The room, with a King-sized bed, was clean, comfortable, and functional. The shower (no tub) provided good water pressure with what seemed to be neverending hot water. The toilet, sink, and other areas were also clean, functional, and had no issues.

We had one issue with the right-hand side windows. Apparently, one of the "window guards" had been bent/broken, allowing for at least one window to be wide open, and difficult to close. We asked the reception about this, and they basically indicated that we should close the window and not use it until engineering could fix it. This became frustrating when housekeeping would open the windows daily.

Breakfast was good, with a large variety of hot and cold items. What I especially liked was the ease of finding everything, including beverages. If you can book a stay including breakfast, I would say this is a much better option than what is available in the club level lounge every morning, and more spacious.

We utilized the bar - "Plusch" - to make use of the 20 Euro/Night voucher/credit on our account. It is a very comfortable area to spend some time and use the free wireless internet in the lobby area. One night, we only spent 18 Euros of our credit, so we gave the server a 2 Euro tip (to account for the whole 20 Euros). Upon check-out, we were informed that tips were not included in our credit, and told that under no circumstance that this credit included service or tips. However, they neglected to tell us this upon check-in, and the reception staff attempted to make this our problem rather than theirs. After many sour faces were made by the staff, they reluctantly took the 2 Euro charge off of our account. Please heed my warning if you use this package.

Overall, the hotel is a very lovely hotel, and the rooms are comfortable. Dealing with the staff, however, made what could have been an excellent stay into somewhat of a joke. Brand loyalty for Marriott is met with indifference, and it felt that those on package stays (like we were) were treated like we were cheating the hotel out of revenue.

Room Tip: Asking for an upgrade will get you dirty looks.

Just outside, but only a short walk, from the actual city center, it's close to the major Cologne attractions and museums, shopping, restaurants and nightlife.
When in search for the reliable Marriott-comfort, this hotel is a great choice. Easy underground parking (be careful, it has some nasty corners!).

When visiting Köln last summer, we stayed at the Marriott. We wanted a place near the train station and close to sightseeing places.

The Marriott is in a quiet and safe area of downtown. The rooms are spacious enough for two persons. They’re well equipped and have flat screen TV’s. Hopefully, other hotels in Germany will get into the 21st century and replace their old 1972 CRT TV’s…

One thing that we noticed, however, is that the room was very dusty. Not because is not maintained but most probably because of the carpet. Even our own belongings were covered with a film of dust after the first day.

The hotel is well suited for business meetings. It has a big lounge and a fancy restaurant. There’s even a TV channel on which you can watch the action in the kitchen. Interesting concept.

The front desk staff is welcoming and speak perfect English.

For breakfast, go to the small Kunibert restaurant just beside the hotel. The lady is very friendly. She will get you warm croissants, muesli fruit cup, orange juice and hot coffee in 5 minutes. For lunch, they have a variety of sandwiches and soups.

We must say that we didn’t like Köln that much (at least the part of town that we visited). The train station (with its weird crowd –especially at night) right in front of the famous Dom, didn’t do it for us. There are lots of punks hanging around the Dom at night. They don’t seem violent but they sure make a lot of noise as they get drunk.
We found everything more expensive than in Berlin, München, Dresden or Hamburg.
There are many restaurants with terrace, in Altstadt (South of the Dom). The waterfront walk is nice. And don’t waste your time going to the chocolate museum, there’s nothing special there.

I stayed here with my mum and had a fabulous time. We got the train from the airport to the main train station in Cologne which takes 20mins and the hotel is then 5 mins walk. You have to exit the opposite doors from the cathedral & main entrance as this was the only thing that confused us but you can get a map from the info stand. The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful, room was a double twin but the beds were large and the room was very spacious! Lovely, very clean room with everything you need and more, daily maid service. We got a b&b deal which is well worth it as the top breakfast buffet is 25 euros each so its best to pay a bit extra when booking, it has everything want and is delicious. If you don't get breakfast then the train station is the main hub of the city and has many eating places. The hotel is 5/10mins walk to the centre of the city and the main shopping area. Everything isn't too spread out so its very easy to get about. The Lindt Choc Museum is about 20mins walk and there is many bars and restaurants round every corner. The city itself is quite a cheap place to eat and drink and only the hotel bars are a little more pricey. There is a small mini shop in the hotel selling drinks and snacks and it was generously priced compared to most 4/5 star hotels. Highly recommended hotel, 5 star quality but at a great price. Cologne is a brilliant city break.
