“Just alright.”
Reviewed 26 February 2010

I don't have anything really negative to say about this hotel. It is a plain and basic hotel with very small rooms. The rooms are very basic with nothing to really make you want to stay in there longer than you have to. The bed was a single bed but surprisingly comfortable. I was here on business and only needed the room for sleeping late at night; so for that purpose i had no complaints. I would not want to stay here with my family or even my spouse. However, for a single room and for just a couple of nights it really is a bargain deal.

The staff spoke good english. They have a hotel restaurant that also serves breakfast. I never ate there and opted for Starbucks each morning which was less than 5 min walk from the hotel. The hotel is in a quiet residential area so it was very quiet every evening. I could walk into the city center of town in under 15 min so that was perfect.

Overall, it is an average hotel; very clean with small rooms. If you just need a place to sleep for a night or two and want to be close enough to walk to town; this is a good place.

The Kolping is a genuine *** hotel - and it's the new rooms that are ***, the older ones are **. The new superior rooms, however, are not cheaper than many a **** hotel, and so, when booking Cologne, it is good to watch the internet offers; they change by the day.

The Kolping is indeed very Catholic, it includes an often-full parking space, quite nice breakfast, a youth hostel and a nice location for shopping (it is on the main antiques street) as well as a very reputable restaurant. It is not ideal for tourism, as the Cathedral and the Rhine are not 5-10 but 15-20 mins. away, longer for less brisk walkers.

Particularly nice and helpful staff.

Great hotel in a very central location. 5-10 minute walk to the neumarket and a nice 10-15 minute walk to the Dom. Staff were very attentive. We stayed in a renovated room which was very large, good wardrobe space and had a good clean bathroom.
The hotel is located in a quiet residential area.

Your stay in the Kolpinghaus will be top or a flop, dependent
on the room you'll get. Be therefore advised to call the
hotel in advance and ask for a renovated room !! The new rooms are tasteful and quite, the rest of the hotel fulfills the standards one expects from a three star hotel. The staff is very helpful and friendly. All in all the hotel is a good place to stay in Cologne.

I stayed in the Kolpinghaus for 3 months in 2006 while I attended the World Cup and studied in Koln. The place is perfectly located to basically everything you would need in Cologne...
Bars, attractions, High Speed Train station, Public train...

I am actually looking at staying here again, on my next trip to Germany next year.

Stayed May 2006
