Stayed 16-19th December 2013: Christmas market trip.
This hotel sits right on the river Rhyne, some 5 mins walk from Cologne cathedral, and at the time we went within 5-10 min walk of three Christmas Markets, the main shopping centre, an abundance of pubs and restaurant's, and of course the FRUH Brewery/pub.
This hotel is basic, but very well managed. It's clean comfortable and has a pretty nice restaurant attached to it, which doubles up for breakfast, should you choose.
During winter there is not a problem with warmth, as there is central heating in the room, however if travelling in summer it could get hot has there didn't appear to have air conditioning. This would mean you would have to open the double glazed windows, which in turn would let in some outside noise. Although the hotel is facing the rhyne it is also quiet near to the local railway bridge, which very occasionally gave way to train noise at night, if your a light sleeper. This hotel is ideal for those wanting to explore Cologne and not wanting to spend all their time in the hotel room, which would be the whole point of going to Cologne. The hotel provided clean towels and bed sheets every day, and small LCD TV, free WiFi, table and chairs in the room and plenty of storage space, a small lift/elevator, and as said a well stocked bar/restaurant. The hotel reception closes at 10pm, so late night owls would need to use a side door which is opened by your room key.
We spent very little time in the room, and explored this wonderful city, which bodes one of the worlds most amazing cathedrals, which is free to entre and explore. From mid November through to Christmas eve cologne as many Christmas markets. We found four within 5-10 mins walk from our hotel, which were all decked out full of Christmas cheer and of course many stalls selling mulled wine, beer, and local food delicacies. The local shopping centre runs through the centre of cologne starting close to the cathedral and stretching along what looked like one straight high street, and small shops branching off form this street.
If your looking for a value for money hotel with good amenities, decent standard of comfort, and above all a prime location for exploring a wonderful city, then a stay at the Drei Kronen hotel, is highly recommended.
We paid 200 Euros for three nights for a double room booked in October. We were in room 32 which overlooked the River Rhyne, Other rooms would overlook the street (would be cheaper the further you book in advance, ask for river view when booking)
We paid 30 Euros in a taxi from Cologne Airport.
This review is purely my opinion. have fun and enjoy

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view over looking the River Rhyne.

we spent 1 night in this hotel and found it very pleasant. Very good location, very close to the main cathedral and train station, with a lot of restaurants and bars around. The staff was very friendly and there was wifi throughout the hotel. The rooms were clean and spacious but rather basic. Furniture is also a bit dated for a three star hotel and bathroom facilities could be renovated. There is no A/C but the fan in the room was appreciated. The price is OK compared to other hotels in the area.

This hotel was very Pleasant to stay at, Specially for a nervous American boy. The staff was very friendly and informative, and really helped me get a feel for the areas of Cologne that I should visit, and the ones that I should stay away from. The rooms were nice and clean, and felt more homey than any big box american Hotel. The location is Amazing, with easy access to the trains, great food, great shopping, and the Cathedral very close by. I would stay here again.

We spent 3 nights in this hotel in August and found it really comfortable and worth every penny. The hotel is located behind the Kölner Dom and the 2 main museums. It´s max 10 min. walk from the main railway station. And next to river Rhein, with lots of cafes and restaurants nearby. The double room was very spacious with comfortable beds and facing the river with a great view! There is no A/C but the fan on the table was enough. There was also a small balkony and big windows that could be opened. The bathroom is a bit small, but worked for us. There is a elevator in the hotel and the staff was very helpful. The main shoppingstreets just behind the corner and different river cruisers 50 m away makes this hotel a practical choice.

Room Tip: I would definitely recommend a room facing the river, we really enjoyed the view.

A very short but wonderful stay at The Drei Kronen. Have been coming to this hotel for many years now and it is placed on a fantastic setting overlooking the Rhine. The food and drink in the local bars are fantastic sering the local Bier Kolsch.
