It's nothing fancy, but if all you need is a clean room with a private bath and shower at a budget price, we'd definitely recommend Hotel Koenig. The proprietors couldn't be more kind, friendly and helpful (and speak some English). The included breakfast buffet is quite good. We liked the quirky decor. Although the hotel is outside the center of Cologne, it's just a few steps away from the Kalk Kapelle U-bahn stop, which is just a few stops (and ten minutes) from the center. It's also easy to get to and from Cologne-Bonn Airport for the price of a subway ride. (Take the S13 S-bahn train to Deutz-Messe station, and the U-bahn three stops from there.) The hotel is on a lively shopping street in a real working-class heavily-immigrant neighborhood. Staying there, we felt we were immersed in the real life of the city, which we much prefer to staying in a touristy area. There are many inexpensive food and shopping options nearby, including German and Turkish restaurants, supermarkets and a large shopping mall. Only two caveats: First there's no elevator, and some of the rooms are up quite a few stairs. Second, we were there in the winter, and the rooms were a little chilly. If we go back to Cologne, we'll definitely stay there again.
