“Perfect location - great hotel”
Reviewed 7 May 2013

Travelling to Dusseldorf on business? This hotel will definitely meet your needs. You can walk to the Altstadt in 20 minutes or take a tram. Bus station is close by if you are going to Messe and the ride to Messe is a short one.

As for the hotel...it is a wonderfully simple, European hotel. The rooms are small, but give you what you need. The staff were great and helped with everything I needed. Breakfast is included and was perfect for me. The rooms are clean and very comfortable. This is not a US-chain, so don't try to compare it to one.

I really enjoyed my stay here and will go back.

The location of this hotel is not so bad, you can reach the hotel with 1 single tram from the central station (Hauptbahnhof) or 2 from the city center. Rooms are quite big and are really very clean, the room we had could not be darkened at night so light came in quite early in the morning, perhaps it was because there was a window in the corner (2 sides) of the room, this was the only downside of this hotel, very friendly people at reception, reasonably priced, good breakfast available for less than 9 euros (optional).

We booked this hotel just to be close to the airport, as our transcontinental flight left early in the morning. As a result, we didn't really "use" the hotel, we only arrived, went out for dinner, and left the next morning. But the room was clean, there was internet to check the latest flight details, and there was a taxi 'base' right next to it. The latter meant that when we called a cab, it was at the hotel within the minute.

The hotel gets 4 stars instead of 3, because it's located so close to some pretty great local restaurants (try "Gingerboy".) That, in combination with the stuff described above, makes this an ideal "pre-flight" hotel if you're leaving from Düsseldorf.

Room Tip: Try to get a room that's pointed towards Ulmenstraße, that way you avoid the streetcar (tram) dr...

Staff has very bad English. My room was not cleaned upon check-in at 3 p.m., so I had to wait for 20 mins. Just upon check-in they promised a quiet room overlooking the yard (they even showed the direction) but I got a room on a noisy street with trams. Woke up at 6 a.m. 3 consecutive days because of the noise. Very problematic to get access to "free" wi-fi. They refer to a site which requires registration which sends an e-mail for authentification. But how to get an e-mail before obtaining a wi-fi connection?

The last drop was my question what was the temperature outside. The answer was "I don't know". They really don't care!

Okay, so the purpose of my visit to Dusseldorf was to attend Drupa, the world's biggest printing tradeshow, which only occurs every 4 years. It attracts around 400,000 attendees, and accordingly accommodation is extremely tight. It appears that every hotel in Dusseldorf triples their rates whenever there's an exhibition on because - well, because they can. The Spichernplatz is no exception.

What would normally run for around 50 Euros a night, cost me 230 Euros a night, with a meager buffet breakfast adding another 9 Euros per night. That adds up to US$321 per night when I was there (in May 2012). They advertise "free wifi", which for a traveling business-person is almost an absolute necessity these days - but of course the wifi simply didn't work. The only place I could get a connection was in the Reception area - not the most conducive to conducting normal business.

The room itself was clean, but very dated and extremely small. A single bed consumed most of the space, and the bathroom was designed for midgets. The shower was almost a joke by modern standards - and my window opened onto a tram stop. This wouldn't have been a major issue, except that there is no A/C and you therefore need to leave the window cracked to keep the room at a reasonable temperature - so the noise was constant and sleep extremely difficult.

In short, a 2-star hotel which is probably okay for back-packers, budget travelers and the like, but they're charging 5-star money because - well, just because they can. I'm a believer in supply and demand, but extortion is another thing.

3 stars - it's max.
Good breakfast, standard of rooms exactly 3 stars.
Much more important, it's clean.

My wife and I stayed there for four days while attending Prowein. It is a small hotel centrally located near bus routes and you can get the Tram across the street.

Rooms are small but maximum use of space make them roomy enough for a couple. The beds are very comfortable and the room, including the bathroom , was spotless!

The hotel staff, especially the young man who worked on the weekend, were very helpful.
Althought we did not partake of their breakfasts other guests said there were great. The Greek restaurant attached to the hotel is a fine place to eat with 'large' portions at reasonable prices.

Free internet is available but for some reason not in my room. However my door opened into the reception area where it did work. This leads to my only negative point about my stay here.
My room was non smoking but smoking was allowed in the lobby which meant I was exposed to it quite often.
Room prices were high but that is because Prowein was in town.

I would stay there again if smoking was banned everywhere in the hotel.

Room Tip: Try for rooms that do not open into the reception/lobby area.
