Mercure Hotel Duesseldorf City Center
Ranked #42 of 240 Hotels in Dusseldorf
Reviewed 11 January 2014

My wife and I stayed at Mercure Duesseldorf City Center during the month of December, and we had a beautiful time and experience. We arrived to the hotel at 7:20 a.m. since we had an early flight, and although it is not always possible, by 7:30 we were already in our room. The reception was very welcoming and the attention of all the staff members was excellent throughout our whole stay. The rooms are very clean, the location of the hotel is extremely convenient, and everyone makes everything possible and very comfortable for their guests. We were totally satisfied with the professionalism, courtesy, and friendliness of the employees, including the ones that handle the great plentiful breakfast buffet in the morning. Our very special and sincere compliments to Angelika Lange who kindly made possible for us to have such an outstanding and enjoyable time at Mercure Duesseldorf City Center Hotel!!

We stopped in this hotel for two nights in early December and were impressed with the service, the quality of the hotel and the room was great. After a non-stop 3 leg flight from Brisbane we really appreciated the comfortable bed. We had our breakfasts in the restaurant which was excellent and it was a novelty for us to see dogs allowed in the hotel, a great service idea! We spent a day out of town in Kleve so we were a little time poor to see everything. The hotel is close to the railway station which was perfect for our needs and also we found some great cafes. We walked to the Christmas markets in the old town which was delightful. It was wonderful to see the Rhine again! Getting back to the hotel was fun on the tram after too many gluhweins! A great re-introduction to Germany and just a taster for our first Christmas in Munich.

Have just got home having spent 3 nights, with friends, at the Mecure Dusseldorf City Hotel and let me tell you folks out there in Tripadvisor land that this hotel ruined our New Year Trip! We arrived on Monday evening, having spoken to them the day before, to inform them that due to a flight change we would be late arriving. German friends were waiting to greet us at the hotel as we checked in and suggested we all go to the bar for a welcome drink. The hotel manager casually told me that the bar was closed! What just for tonight ? No for the whole of the New Year period and the restaurant as well!! I thought I'd met a German with a sense of humour but no it was true! So there we are in a 4 star hotel for New Year and the bar is closed.............Well we went across the road to a Greek bar and drank there. The following day I spoke to the manager Peter Koldehoff and he explained that it was Mecure hotels company policy to close the bars and restaurants in all their hotels in Dusseldorf over the festive period! (If anyone can tell this is true please let me know).I asked him why we were never notified about this policy because had I known this when booking last August I would have not have booked. I would have booked the Mecure Severinshof in Koln where we had a great time 2 years ago! He just looked at me and said ''company policy''. No apology or offer of any compensation!!! On a brighter note. The hotel is good position for the shops and OldTown. Breakfast was good and the bedrooms were clean though our room was rather hot! Clean towels and bedding each day. It's just a great shame that we were never able to try the cocktails or snacks that the hotel brochure advertises that could be served to us in the L'Apero bar.Or treat ourselves to the delights that a dedicated kitchen team in the Quatre Saison restaurant could tantalize our taste buds to! We will never know because I will not be going there for Christmas or New Year again!

Room Tip: Rooms at the rear are quieter as the front over looks a main road and tram track.

We stayed for two nights for a weekend visit and we can't fault a thing room was nice and clean staff friendly and efficient and a really good bar would definitely return and it is perfectly situated for the sites
If I was to moan about anything I think €22 for breakfast is abut steep but if you don't want to pay we didn't

I found this hotel when searching for a reasonably priced, well located hotel for my family (6 adults) and I for a short break to visit the Christmas Markets. I booked it for the price and the time it said it took to walk to the Markets. I became a bit sceptical after reading a few bad reviews leading up to our visit, but had no reason to!

Before leaving the UK, and based on a recent review where someone had their booking cancelled, I emailed the hotel to ensure all was well with our reservation – I usually would anyway, we also informed them that due to flight times we would be arriving late. Upon arrival, they were really helpful, checking us in quickly so we could settle in, and recommending a local bar that was still open – this was Café de Paris, which I highly recommend for a late night drink and of course a schnaaps! (just not on a Sunday when they’re closed!).

The hotel itself was nice, clean and good room sizes – there was nothing I could find fault with! The rooms were made up each day and fresh towels available if you wanted them. All the staff were really friendly and helpful, and gave us directions to where we wanted to be. I can’t comment on the breakfast as we didn’t have it, as I have to say €22 per person is a bit steep for a buffet hotel breakfast!!

The location was good, but when it says a 10 minute walk to the markets, this means a 10 minute walk to the closest one! There are 6 markets in Düsseldorf, the one closest one is nice, and has good stalls, but the best market is located in the old town, about 25 minute walk from the hotel. We didn’t mind the walk at all, and preferred to stay a bit further out, especially when it saves you a lot of money, but is something to bear in mind if you’re not a fan of walking! The old town also hosts a lot of bars and restaurants which are lovely, and I would definitely recommend.

All in all, I really liked the hotel, and would go back if I were to travel to Düsseldorf again, I think the bad reviews are based on people’s individual bad experiences and personal tastes, which unfortunately, is inevitable. If you’re looking for a clean, well-priced and conveniently located hotel, then this ticks all the boxes.

Room Tip: Specif if you want a non-smoking room, I am not sure if you can still smoke in the rooms, but ones w...

We stayed for three nights at a good value rate which included breakfast. There was good hot and cold options for breakfast and staff provided an on the spot service for the frying of eggs and other meals. There was plenty of fresh fruit as well as very tasty pieces of confectionery. The breakfast room was bright, modern and airy. We were visiting from a Sunday to Wednesday in December and there were no delays at breakfast time. While the room was somewhat dated it was to a very acceptable standard. The lift is very small and slow and I would not like to be checking in with a group! All the staff were friendly and helpful. The check-in and check-out process was efficient. The hotel advertises that the rooms have a mini-bar. The first room we were offered did not have one and we asked for a different room. A different room was quickly provided. We learned from reception that they are phasing out the minibars and that around 80% of the rooms have them. If you require a minibar make sure to check beforehand. Rooms have a flat screen TV, tea and coffee making facilities, very good bathrooms and showers. The bar is quiet small but better than some Mercure Hotels we have stayed in. There is a restaurant, but we only availed of the bar food which is reasonably priced and quiet acceptable. There is free internet in the Lobby. The tram service in Dusseldorf is excellent and there is a tram stop within 5 minutes of the hotel. Trams that stop there serve the Hauptbanhoff and the Alstadt. The main station is about 12 minutes walk from the hotel, but some of the intervening streets are not the most attractive. There are also U Bahn options but they are some distance from the hotel. I would strongly recommend the Day Options for travel, which allow use of several modes of transport within reach of the hotel. It is very much a business hotel but quiet adequate for any form of short stay.

Room Tip: The hotel is located on a corner site but I didn't notice any noise. We were at the back of the...

We had guaranteed room reservations because we were arriving about midnight... When we arrived we were told there was no room for us. After much research, they found that our guaranteed room reservation had been cancelled for our credit card. They never bothered to call us or to contact our travel agent - like throwing us out on the street!!! They finally grudgingly gave us a disable persons room with one single bed - for 2 people. I guess it was better than sleeping on the streets.

Room Tip: Steer clear of this hotel- it was very unprofessional to not save a room after it was paid for..cann...
