I stayed in Unterbilk for three months for work, and I can recommend it for many reasons. Firstly, the area has excellent public transport links. Bilk S bahn station/ tram stops (712, 713, 706) also D Bilk - Friedrichstrasse/ D Bilk - Elizabethstrasse tram stops (707, 708) connect the area to most of the rest of the city quite easily and quickly. For example from D Bilk - Elizabethstrasse, the HBF is only ten minutes and 5 stops away. A little north, the tram stop for Kirchplatz or D Bilk take you to the heart of the Altstadt and Bolkerstrasse in two or three stops.
Another great find is Floragarten, a well landscaped park complete with duck pond, arching bridges, children's play area, even an 'off leash' fenced in dog run. On a sunny day, locals bask on blankets and enjoy the birds.
The area is rife with small restaurants for all budgets, from Portuguese to Italian to Mexican and Brazilian. The Dusseldorf Arkaden is next door to D Bilk and is the main shopping area, with Real food shop opposite. Next to that is a public swimming bath.
All in all, a great place to see how the average Dusseldorfer lives, a good base for sightseeing, too. The accommodation in the area, though, will be short term studio flats rather than hotels, though, so not for tourists for short stays, really.
