I had the fortune of dining at the Walsumer Hof three times in the five months. I have never really looked at the menu and have always relied on Carsten, the very nice and superbly helpful waiter, to pick what's the best for that evening. I usually eat in moderation but I have left without room to spare because it's simply amazing. I usually ask that two of the fish dishes be smoked and the rest are the chefs choice. It's rustic fare (my favorite) and done with a lot of love. The owner/chef always stops by to make sure the dinner is to your liking (a really old school yet much appreciated touch).

This old inn is on the river Rhine at the centre of what used to be a small ferry town near Duisburg. All buildings have been demolished except for the Walsumer hof to build two new powerplants (opened in 2006 but still not working well)... Good restaurant to eat fish in a very cosy and yet surreal athmosphere. Don't drink too much you'll have hallucinations when you walk out.

Let me start off with some positive words to make sure the excerpt you see in the search results is good: this place was amazing, the food was amazing, the service was outstanding and they trusted us to pay by wire when we got home because we couldn't pay in situ.

Coming from the Netherlands, we were planning to visit the Zoo in Duisburg by car and to have dinner around Duisburg before returning home. We found this restaurant through Tripadvisor, and the following features drew our attention: you could eat in the garden (it was a beautifully sunny day) and they specialised in fish. It was right on the banks of the river Rhine, and it was not too far out of the way since we had a car. If you rely on public transport, it may be a whole lot tougher to get there, which is a shame for tourists looking for great food in Duisburg. But if you have a car, I strongly advise you to visit this place! There was ample space for free parking. No reservations in the garden, but it wasn't all that crowded when we arrived and we could get seated straight away.

We require gluten-free preparation of our meals, and while they weren't familiar with the concept, they listened attentively and our food was prepared without any gluten at no extra charge (we experienced no problems at all.) While perusing the menu, we got a plate of fresh prawns, and later we also got a complementary plate of scallop-like shells (I forgot their name) to help kill the time until our main dish arrived. The amount of available types of fish was astonishing judging by the menu only, and then there was even a list of "daily stuff from the market" that wasn't even on the menu. We ordered a "mix of fish, give us what you've got" and a smoked zander. During our ordering, the staff was happy to help us decide by giving advise based on what type of fish we knew we liked, and they translated german fish names we weren't familiar with. Some waiters spoke a bit of Dutch, and I guess all of them spoke English.

This place has its own smoking oven, and I highly recommend ordering your favourite fish smoked. It takes a while (they freshly smoke everything on demand) but it is definitely worth it! It was probably the best zander I had ever eaten. Moreover, both our plates came with an extra side of panfried catfish, which was delicious as well. Also, there was a bevy of sauces, all in nice silverware, and there was a huge bowl of traditional bratkartoffeln (baked potatoes with bacon and maybe some onion.) Of course, this being Germany, there was a nice selection of beers on tap.

One second minor downside (the first being that they did not know what gluten-free entailed before we explained it to them) is that you can only pay cash. We did not know this in advance, so we didn't bring any. I offered to drive to an ATM, leaving my girlfriend behind as a hostage, but they just gave me their bank account number and told me to wire the money to them when I got home, which I guess is an enormous sign of good faith. While the river was close, you couldn't see it from the garden - but there were flowers and a small menagerie, so there was plenty of atmosphere regardless.

While we were having dinner, the owner came by and asked whether everything was okay and whether our dietary requirements were met. It was clear that this was a guy who enjoyed his job. I wish this place was in my own city instead of in Duisburg. So one last time: if you're in or near Duisburg and have a car, definitely consider this place!

If you like fish, this cozy place is the place to go. The young cheerful waitress didn't even let us read the whole menu, as it seems the best way to order here is to let them give you a few choices and then recommend something. The fish comes prepared one of three ways: steamed, smoked, or lightly pan-fried. I think pan-fried was the best, but my husband also enjoyed the smoked ones. They have many types of fish to offer- bass, halibut, catfish, etc. You can choose a large portion or a smaller one, with bones or without, one type of fish or two. Most dishes come with all-you-can-eat oven-fried potatoes and a very nice salad with lots of yummy bits in it- not just plain lettuce and the token tomato slice. Two sauces are offered with your plate of food- a mustard sauce and a tomato-mushroom sauce. The mustard sauce is amazing, especially when paired with a squeeze of lemon. Both sauces are great on the fish as well as the potatoes. We shared a shrimp soup, which turned out to be a very different flavor than expected- it was almost tropical and fruity, but wonderful. They brought us some peel-and-eat shrimp as a starter as well. I'm not sure if they asked us, or just brought them. Additionally when we had finally cleaned our plates and thought we could eat no more, a waiter brought us another filet of pan-fried catfish.

Our waitress spoke excellent English and provided an English menu, but if you know a little German you might want to forego the English menu because some food descriptions don't really translate all that well.

They do 2 seatings each evening (17:30 and 20:00), and they recommend reservations. We got lucky by showing up at 18:30 and a table had already been vacated, but there's no guarantee you'll be so lucky; we did have to make sure we were gone by 20:00, which was no problem. If you have 2 to 4 people, and this place is on your way, it's worth it to take the chance, as the food was really nice, not something you find just anywhere. But if you've a larger group or are celebrating, call ahead. Be aware that they don't take credit cards. Our cost per person with a starter, entree, and cola was around 30 Euro.

The chef makes it his mission to greet every guest, and the staff were attentive. Eating here was an experience you shouldn't miss.
