“Good business hotel”
Reviewed 22 January 2014

I stayed a few years ago and again this month for two nights. Got a large room on the top floor. Quality room decor, flat screen TV, tea/coffee making facilities, minibar etc. Fast internet is available in room 5 euros for entire stay or free in lobby areas.

I find the staff helpful. No iron/ironing board but they ironed a shirt for me in about an hour. There is no restaurant on site however they are linked to an italian restaurant just around the corner. You can order room service from the menu and it is brought to your room. Mine arrived quickly and was better than typical hotel room service offerings because it is from a commercial restaurant. There is also a bar at the hotel.

Breakfast was good wide choice of hot and cold. TV has a lot of channels virtually all German or dubbed into German. There are a couple of english channels, BBC world etc.

There is a small pool and tiny gym area in the basement. Also sauna etc. All clean and in good condition.

Small service hiccups with printing boarding pass from downstairs computer. However this hotel aims to provide good service and it would be my choice again in Duisburg. For art minded people there is a good museum across the street,

sure its not a wellness hotel somewhere special but really its need a serious renovation! the floor in my room looked ancient and my room did not smell great ...also it was noisy and the heating did not function properly. ..also the service was average ...they tried to be friendly without any competence ...so if you have the choice go somewhere else

I had to stay in Hotel Plaza for 4 nights during my work trip in Duisburg. The hotel is clean and neat, however it is not worth the 4 stars and price I had to pay for. The gym was tiny, with 3 machines, a tiny pool and not head up either. Breakfast and service was OK.

The only advantage of this place is that is in the centre of the town. The lobby smelled of food as we entered. The rooms are very basic and not very well maintained. Breakfast was ok, simple not what you would aspekt in a 4 star bussiness hotel.Wouldn't recommend it, Hotel Conti a little bit further down the same street is cheaper and better.

I have stayed at this hotel many times over the past 10+ years and it consistently maintains a high level of quality. The breakfast is great and the rooms are spartan yet comfortable. If I had one complaint, it is the quality of the internet service provided. Every time I have stayed here the internet connectivity is either flaky or just plain poor. Also, they only provide wireless internet in the lobby, while the rooms require a wired internet connection. Kind of behind-the-curve on the internet capabilities.

My wife and I stayed at this hotel during a conference at the nearby Duisberg-Essen University. We weren't expecting much of the hotel or the city as Duisberg is a former industrial city on the Rhone-Rhine Rivers. To our surprise we enjoyed both very much. The Plaza is a small boutique hotel about a 10-15 minute walk from the railway station. It is situated directly across from a nice museum dedicated to a German sculptor who worked in Paris in the 20th century (our room looked out on it). We were given a large corner suite with a dining room, living room, and bedroom and bathroom. They were all quite comfortable, decently appointed, and had free wifi. The breakfasts in the breakfast room in the morning were quite good. The staff at the small front desk were very friendly and nice. There is a bar at the hotel as well but we did not avail ourselves of it during our stay.

The city itself is a bit shabby but has been revived since its industrial age. There are also excellent restaurants. We were taken to two very good ones during my conference, and my wife and I on another night discovered one of the best Thai restaurants we've ever eaten at. There is an interesting Holocaust Memorial Park, designed by an Israeli landscape designer, around the area that was once the Jewish ghetto (the rabbi was hauled off and much of the ghetto destroyed during Kristalnacht in 1938). The city is only a short train ride from Dusseldorf on the Rhine, with a great outdoor food market, nice river walks, and shopping. The Dusseldorf Airport, into which you fly to go to Duisberg, is wonderful and puts all American airports to shame.

Room Tip: If you can get a corner suite, do so.
