“Cultural heaven in a boring environment”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 July 2014

Although I like Essen, the city centre and esp. the area around the Art Hotel Korschen, is not a very inspiring environment. People come here for shopping, and that is about the only thing you can do. The more interesting parts of the city, like its Industrial heritage, are to be found in the inner and outer suburbs. Art Hotel Korschen however is an oasis in an otherwise boring environment. You feel very welcome from the first moment you enter the building, if only for the offer of a free drink. Art is everywhere and this, together with the excellent buffet breakfast, is really why you should consider staying here. My room also featured tea and coffee making facilities and a balcony.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front face a busy street. The elevator runs until the 4th flour, so you have to walk so...

We stayed at the art Hotel Körschen and must say it was not at all as we expected. Web page looked good enough, as well as the comments on tripadvisor.
On the positive side:
- Welcome drink
- Some staff were friendly, but generally couldn’t be bothered
- Close to the city (5 min. walk)
- Pizzeria across the road
On the negative side:
- Internet worked not all the time
- Some TV channels are not working, areal cable was loose
- Electrical socket was not covered
- Coffee amenities were not refilled without asking for it
- Housekeeping was the biggest disappointment, (one day no one cleaned at all, than the bed linen was not changed daily, generally not cleaned properly, Balcony dirty, etc….)
- All walls were scratched and had marks
- Bathroom sink water did not run off properly
- Breakfast buffet temperature to warm no proper cooling and hot dishes not hot (was only one dish anyway); very unhygienic especially the orange press
- In room safe when you found it, you have to get down onto your knees in order to use it, (this way at least you get the floor clean).
- Bar was mentioned on the web page, but not existent
The price was like in a 4 star hotel, but the facilities and services not even close to a 2 star Hotel.
If someone would have cared to ask or follow-up, I think most of the negative comments could have avoided or addressed.

Location is very good, central, and just a short walk from the main railway station. Pedestrianised shopping street Kettwiger Strasse is only a few minutes away too. The property looks newly renovated and more modern from the inside than from the outside. I got a warm welcome. My room was on the top floor facing a back yard. It was very quiet. It had all the amenities, very modern and spotless, and I found the bed very comfortable. WiFi is free. I missed breakfast, unfortunately since it got some great reviews. All in all a very pleasant experience and excellent value for money.

This is a very clean, modern hotel near the Essen train station. It isn't one of the larger hotels in the area, so make sure to get your bearings about the hotel location, because although it was very close we had some trouble finding it and actually had to take a short taxi ride to the hotel.

As others have mentioned the lack of carpeting in the hallways means that the noise can echo quite a bit. We always travel with earplugs, but if you're sensitive to noise you should be aware of this.

The breakfast spread was AMAZING. It additional to the usual cold meats, cheeses there were probably a dozen bread options and even multiple mineral water choices! It was one of the most unique breakfasts we had during our entire trip.

The person at the front desk who helped us checkout was great. Very friendly and loaded us up with snacks and helpful information when we left. The hotel will also sent postcards for you for free from the hotel.

It was a great place for us to stay during the Internationale Spieltage SPIEL (board game fair).

I'm often in Essen, and had them all: shabby hotel garnis, friendly family pensions, higher starred hotels. If you aren't familiar to Essen City, you should know that ther is a high volatility in the hotel rates depending on the fairs and conventions (Messe) and you can easily end up settling for an overpriced rundown room as the good spots are quickly booked out.

The Hotel Korschen charges around 80 Euro a night, which might under normal circumstances be considered as a bit to expensive for what it is; however we are in Essen: and here Korschen has proved to be a good choice in the medium price segment and delivered well (in comparison with other Essen hotels charging that rate). Check however the deals with higher starred hotels, as they can sometimes also be found for the same price.

Hotel Korschen provides clean rooms, with some free of charge ammenties: safe, TV with Sat receiver (yes, all the free adult channels are conveniently programmed from channel 30 onwards :), kettle with tea and coffee, earplugs, sudoku riddle, female hygiene set. Furthermore you can buy a reasonable priced selection of articles which are displayed in your room: batteries, Shaving stuff, medical first aid, condoms, and *giggle* pleasure providing stuff for ladies. Shower gel is provided in their spacious bathrooms, but nothing else.

Staff is very friendly. Large choice on breakfast buffet, inc. such funny stuff as water which is energised by minerals and multivitamin tablets.

Downsides: very hard cheap bed, hotel overall tiled, big bags with messy dirty towels and sheets all over the floors in the morning (as they have no other place to store it), no minibar in room (but you can buy it downstairs - where they also have complimentary biscuits and sweets).

Conclusion: recommendable hotel.

Hotel very central, clean and adequate but you'll need earplugs! Nothing to do with traffic. No carpets! Bedrooms and hallways all hard tiled so we heard every footstep, every door banging and echo-ing. Room keys had huge Perspex key-rings which also clattered against every lock. The staff were very nice but we stayed 4 nights and didn't get much sleep so won't return. Could be solved by putting carpets in halls and stairs!
