I stayed at the Mercure Plaza hotel in Essen for a short business trip in July 2014.

The hotel is conveniently located within a short walk of the main shopping area of Essen where there are plently of bars and restaurants which is very convenient.

The hotel is very modern and clean and the staff are very friendly and helpful.

There is a patio area at the back which is nice in the summer.

The breakfast was good, overall a nice hotel.

My boyfriend and I stayed at this hotel for 3 nights as part of a HolidayLine.be package. We paid about 99 euro each, and breakfast was included in our stay.

When we arrived, the hotel looked fairly typical. It does provide underground parking for guests (for a price...16 euro per day, but it's gated and literally RIGHT next to the hotel entrance). From there, reception was very friendly and quick. Staff not only helped us with our check-in, but provided instructions on tourist areas and restaurants, along with a very helpful map. This was unsolicited assistance, and was very appreciated!

Our room was spacious, clean, and well laid out. In the standard room, you get a king bed (one mattress...more unusual than not in Europe), a desk and small table with chairs, bottle of water at cost, and a stocked minibar. The bathroom is fair sized, with shower/tub combo and one sink. Only downside: the temperature control was weak. It worked, but it was not enough to fully cool the room. We solved the problem with an open window, but the hotel is RIGHT on a really big road into downtown, so if you are a light sleeper, keep that in mind. We didn't have any trouble.

The bed: it was a firmer mattress, but I enjoyed it. The pillows were VERY nice. They are longer, and you really only need one. It does creak a bit (the spring system is obviously metal and there is no box spring) but it's not a big deal.

The bathroom: this was the only part of this hotel that I thought could have been better. The shower door is half length, so water WILL get on the floor if you don't put a towel down. My boyfriend nearly slipped and hurt himself, so the floors are a hazard. This is aggravated by the fact that the tub is set really high. I'm 5' 8" and I had trouble getting out without slipping. Just take care in the bathroom!

The breakfast: was AMAZING. Lots of hot and cold selections. I really enjoyed the sausage links, sautéed mushrooms, and potatoes. My boyfriend is more of the pastry/cold cut type, and they have that too. The woman who primarily runs the breakfast is so nice. Always checks up on you, says hello and goodbye to every single guest, and brings drinks right to the table.

All in all, we'd definitely stay here again. The bathroom is not in bad shape, just a bit dangerous if you don't pay attention.

Hotel is located walking distance from Essen train station. Altough the hotel is nearby, it's still on "wrong" side of the station compared to the downtown. There's nothing much nearby the hotel if you want to eat something else than at the hotel restaurant. Alleys smell anoyingly of cigarette smoke. Really good parking hall if you're travelling by car.

Easy access from the train station. Efficient and courteous staff. Excellent breakfast buffet. Quiet rooms overlooking the courtyard. Had to pay 9 Euro/day for wifi access which I felt was a bit out of date but free access to the hotel computer helped.good room service, very clean and cozy rooms.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the courtyard are very quiet.

The hotel decor is circa 1980s so despite large rooms it is quite basic. However, we spent less than twelve hours here and for purposes it did he job. We had a balcony but we were connected to other rooms so it was not private. We are Accor members and there was no Sofitel. This is perhaps fairly 'no frills' for the price. Probably fine if you do not have to stay here for long. Breakfast was generous but staff were not overly warm. The museum nextdoor is magnificent though!

This place really needs some updating.
