“Good value Hotel in decent location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 April 2013

This hotel is at the other end of the shopping centre from the Hauptbanhof. It is about 10 minutes walk from the station or a couple of stops on the tram. It is very convenient for the University and for shopping. It was also very good value and they included a free local transport pass that allowed unlimited access to the trams, buses, S-trains and regional expresses. (you could use it to get to Dusseldorf International Airport - saving the normal 10$ 50 fare). Breakfast was also included as was a good Wifi connection and (unusually) a free small minibar containing beer and soft drinks.
My single room was small, but adequate and well thought out. Lighting was good and the bed was comfortable. The staff were very friendly and helpful

I stayed here while attending a conference at Duisburg-Essen University. The hotel is just a few minutes walk from the campus. It was very clean and comfortable, although my room was quite small, and also it looked over the main road, which made it very noisy. The really annoying thing was that one could only access the ground floor and exit by the lift - the stairs opened on to every floor EXCEPT the ground floor. This was a real nuisance in the morning when everyone was trying to leave the hotel at the same time. Otherwise, no wow factor but very pleasant stay although a little pricey.

Though the outside may look "questionable" to Americans, the inside was very nice. Excellent service by friendly staff; delicious complimentary breakfast; clean; spacious. We spent a week here while my husband was in the area for business and it is very well located to a large, nice shopping district & several historic buildings worth seeing--all within easy walking distance. We enjoyed our stay very much.

Ideal city centre location with instant access to public transportation. The staff was friendly and helpful. A great value with a hot buffet breakfast, free mini-bar, (re-stocked daily) and pass for local public transport. The room was spacious, clean and efficient. I enjoyed my stay and will recommend to others and stay again myself.

I stayed at the City Hotel, in Essen, for a night during my trip to Speil 2011. The hotel was pleasant and the staff were friendly. The single room was nice and the bed was particularly comfortable. Breakfast in the morning was nice though, and this is a personal preference, I'd love to see beans on the menu! Cleaners were good though perhaps too enthusiastic - I slept in the middle of the day after the flight and they came into my room a couple of times. My fault, I should have had the 'Do not disturb' sign on the door. Hotel is in a good location, five minutes walk from the station and simple to find. Doesn't look great from outside but don't be put off its a good little hotel.
