“A lucky find”
Reviewed 10 July 2014

Found this hotel purely by chance and was very lucky. It has a great location near to town centre. Really helful staff, a very spacious room with great double bed, table and chairs and also a desk with a proper desk chair. Very large flat screen TV Even though our room was on the side nearest the very large junction it was very quiet with excellent soundproofing. . Bathroom looked dated but worked perfectly. We enjoyed an excellent breakfast included in the price. Also had excellent free wifi. Very, very good value for the money

We booked the room for 1 night. We was here one time before and I liked it at our first visit. Nothing changed. Extreme friendly staff, helpful and in good mood. The room was big enough to move, some hotels have so small rooms that u have to struggle your way around the bed. Not so here. Bathroom is a bit small but it has a tub. Big plus! U get enough towels, hairdryer, shampoo and soap and its clean. The minibar is included as well as a fast wifi and if I ever go back to Essen I will book a room here again. Its central and has a good prize!

I've stayed at the City Hotel Essen in February 2014 for a business trip/Trade Fair in Düsseldorf.

The price was pretty OK, the rooms had a very good size, the cleaning quality was good, the staff was very helpful and the restaurant had a very good selection of breakfast.

The elevator was very slow and you couldn't walk from the ground floor to the next floors :0(

But all in all, it's an OK choice for a stay:0)

Looks a bit old fashioned on the out and inside but nevertheless good price quality. My room was HUGE!
Nice staff, they were very helpful. Good location in the center, 5-10 min walk from the shopping mall, they give a free public transport ticket, good wifi, free minibar, decent breakfast buffet German style.

A tram station just outside the hotel combined with the free public transport ticket provided by the hotel makes this just perfect. You can get to the hotel from the railway station in a few minutes and it is conveniently close to the restaurants/cafes/bars/clubs of the center to walk to. The breakfast is typical for German hotels, but as it is free, I could not ask for more. Even the minibar (though very spartan) is free, so at least you get a beer every night :)

I will definitely choose this hotel again on my next trip.

A few weeks ago I was at a gig in Essen, backstage with the band, and had my computer case c/w laptop, passport, spectacles, razor and other personal accoutrements stolen - one minute it was there, the next it had gone. Luckily my son was able to lock my laptop remotely from the UK (thank goodness for Apple software) and I had a back up in a separate bag. The upshot was that my tour bus had to move on and I went to the local police filed reports and hen, around 2 a., was directed to City Hotel Essen where, for €60 I got a smashing room with with, water and a very comfortable bed to enable me to gird my lions for a trip to Dusseldorf to get an emergency passport - but that's another story.

Room Tip: None, but even though I overlooked the main road the glazing did its job and it was quiet.

This hotel is at the other end of the shopping centre from the Hauptbanhof. It is about 10 minutes walk from the station or a couple of stops on the tram. It is very convenient for the University and for shopping. It was also very good value and they included a free local transport pass that allowed unlimited access to the trams, buses, S-trains and regional expresses. (you could use it to get to Dusseldorf International Airport - saving the normal 10$ 50 fare). Breakfast was also included as was a good Wifi connection and (unusually) a free small minibar containing beer and soft drinks.
My single room was small, but adequate and well thought out. Lighting was good and the bed was comfortable. The staff were very friendly and helpful
