After not being able to get a hotel in Dusseldorf for love nor money due to a fair we finished up staying out in Essen and first experience to use the Motel One chain.
Have to say was impressed and would certainly consider to use again for a short business or private trip. But would not consider it for a longer stay due to the room weaknesses you get with these boutique style hotels.
Firstly a clear positive is its location in the centre of Essen, a short walk from the main train station and ideally situated for a fair few bars and restaurants (fairly important as the hotel does not have its own restaurant).
Secondly it’s a fairly new build so is clean and modern. There’s obviously been some designer influence going on here, especially in the rooms with their clean styled designs.
Thirdly the pleasantness and helpfulness of the staff was high, especially the check-in staff. This was a good thing, because the check-in procedure is a bit lengthy as they take payment up front (something which is policy for the Motel One chain) and this obviously extends the check in procedure and can be annoying when you are waiting in line. Also this means that you cannot put extras in the bar on your room bill. But on the plus side this does mean you do not need to check out the following morning and can just leave.
The room is very modern and comfortable with a designer layout in both the room and the bathroom. And a great touch was having a real fire video playing on the central wall mounted flat screen tele as you enter. But then the downside is that you do not get much else. A small desk that would be just about big enough for a PC to sit on, no fridge and no wardrobe facilities to speak of, except for a couple of open shelves to the left of the bed, some hangers to the right and a second hanging rail on the wall in front of the bed. Fortunately only staying overnight enabled me to not have to unpack because the last thing I want to see when returning to my room is my uncontained underwear and then have to stare at my suit when in the bed. And I can’t think where the wife would have put her usual arsenal of hair and beauty tools that accompany us on weekend trips.
But the sleep quality was very good, and for an overnight solo business trip it was near on perfect.
