“Good budget boutique style hotel, ideal for an overnight stay”
Reviewed 18 October 2013

After not being able to get a hotel in Dusseldorf for love nor money due to a fair we finished up staying out in Essen and first experience to use the Motel One chain.
Have to say was impressed and would certainly consider to use again for a short business or private trip. But would not consider it for a longer stay due to the room weaknesses you get with these boutique style hotels.
Firstly a clear positive is its location in the centre of Essen, a short walk from the main train station and ideally situated for a fair few bars and restaurants (fairly important as the hotel does not have its own restaurant).
Secondly it’s a fairly new build so is clean and modern. There’s obviously been some designer influence going on here, especially in the rooms with their clean styled designs.
Thirdly the pleasantness and helpfulness of the staff was high, especially the check-in staff. This was a good thing, because the check-in procedure is a bit lengthy as they take payment up front (something which is policy for the Motel One chain) and this obviously extends the check in procedure and can be annoying when you are waiting in line. Also this means that you cannot put extras in the bar on your room bill. But on the plus side this does mean you do not need to check out the following morning and can just leave.
The room is very modern and comfortable with a designer layout in both the room and the bathroom. And a great touch was having a real fire video playing on the central wall mounted flat screen tele as you enter. But then the downside is that you do not get much else. A small desk that would be just about big enough for a PC to sit on, no fridge and no wardrobe facilities to speak of, except for a couple of open shelves to the left of the bed, some hangers to the right and a second hanging rail on the wall in front of the bed. Fortunately only staying overnight enabled me to not have to unpack because the last thing I want to see when returning to my room is my uncontained underwear and then have to stare at my suit when in the bed. And I can’t think where the wife would have put her usual arsenal of hair and beauty tools that accompany us on weekend trips.
But the sleep quality was very good, and for an overnight solo business trip it was near on perfect.

Good situation, good service, nice decorated renewed rooms. Clean bathrooms with hairdryers. You can have more bath products on request at the reception. Nice "aquarium" screen when set up. Good value for money. Rooms are small but still a very good place for citytrips

The hotel is very clean. Brand new. Modern. Excellent location.
Desk Service is very efficient. Helped us with guiding of tours and restaurants.
WiFi worked very good from room and was free if you take the breakfast. It is more than worth the 8 euros you pay. Very complete and excellent as a morning starter.
Will be back ever.

Nicely designed new hotel in a great central location. Convenient to the train station, but my friend had a car which was a minor hassle. Close to the city center, good food, good shopping. The room we had looked out over Kennedy Platz and beyond to a gorgeous view. While the decor was clean, new, and well designed, the beds were not really comfortable. They would have been fine for one night, but 3 nights left us both aching. Also, the bathroom fan didn't really work. When we mentioned that to the desk staff, they said it was one, just low to avoid being loud. But honestly, it didn't get rid of shower steam at all. The 7 euro breakfast was good, but a little pricey. All in all a really nice place.

Room Tip: Ask for one on the plaza.

This is a new motel with new rooms. Located in the city center in Essen, 3 min walk to the main station, 2 min to U-Bahn station, shops/restaurants/bars in the neighbourhood.
Small but new rooms, small desk for your laptop (just for writing a few emails, can't really work there), quite a good wifi.
You have to pay on arrival for the whole accomodation!
There isn't a nice staff - I had problems with my handy and asked the staff to call from their phone (there is no phone in the rooms!!!), they refused, told me it is not possible to call abroad, I should go to the street to call from a phone box (it was 10:00 p.m.!)

It was a new experience in Essen to stay with Motel one. It was a brand new facility with lot of surprises. The personnel at the hotel were really lovely and happy to serve us. The breakfast served was light and worth. the rooms and facilities were clean and well maintained. The places around were really attractive especially the railway station.

But there were some missing elements like phone, refrigerator, wardrobe, sanitary consumables. Be careful when you travel especially with family because the rooms are also relatively small.

Room Tip: No idea about the rooms other than what I stayed.

This is by far one of the best hotels in Essen. I travel here a lot for business and have stayed in various establishments across the city, but Motel One just offers what I need.

The staff are really friendly and put up with my terrible German. The rooms are great and a good size.

The breakfast is good, but I miss not having the offer of a cooked breakfast which is offered by the Movenpick.

Right in the centre of town, so great access to all of the restaurants and businesses.
