Staying at this hotel for a long weekend we appreciated the central location and the quiet efficiency of the staff. The rooms and the style of the hotel are - as all the Motel One's we stayed at so far - of the highest standard to be found for a 'no-Stars' hotel. Modern and uncluttered design, spacious rooms and efficient facilities throughout.

Special about the venue in Essen is the building itself, which gloriously features an art nouveau staircase worth to be listed as a monument all by itself.

Breakfast is the usual standard fare at decent prices. If you are looking for something more elaborate for your Sunday brunch, there are superb options in the immediate vicinity of the hotel. The price level will be more or less the same as that of the hotel.

Dining out in downtown Essen is a pleasure and offers numerous options, all right outside and around the hotel.

The hotel is truly ideal for a long weekend without own transportation. Public transport is easy to reach and will bring you to the sights at very low cost. If Tram is not your preference for moving around, the sight seeing bus has a stop right outside the hotel.

This hotel is located in the centre of town, we walked to the restaurant in the evening and then popped into a bar for coffee on the way back.

There is no check-out, you pay for your stay on arrival and then leave your card at reception. This saves a lot of time because I often find there a queues of people checking-out in the mornings. The receptionist also told us that checking out is by 12.00 which might be useful for some people.

I congratulate the hotel for including Wi-Fi access in the price. You can connect up-to 3 devices using your Wi-Fi password which is important for most travelers as we have laptop, smartphone and sometimes a tablet.

I found a good selection for breakfast and the staff were helpful and friendly.

There are two things they could do to improve the rooms. The first is place an electric socket near the table so you don't have to rely on the laptop battery. The second is placing a lamp on the table to make it easier to work in the evenings.

Lieber Gast,

For me, this is an alternative to Holiday Inn Express or Ibis in Essen. On price there is not much difference, except that Wifi is free at Motel One, making it a bit cheaper than Ibis and quite a bit cheaper than HIE. The rooms are bigger and more stylish than Ibis.

The location is convenient - a five-minute walk to the main station - but there is no hotel car park. The breakfast room - like at Ibis and HIE is an extension of the reception area and very spacious. For my taste, HIE offers the best breakfast followed by Ibis and then Motel One, but there is not a lot in it.

The hotel is attractively designed for a budget hotel and there seemed to be quite a lot of staff around, especially at breakfast.

A disadvantage of the super-economy approach is the very spartan room - there is not even a telephone. Most people, of course, use their mobile. But if you are on the 6th floor and want to call reception you presumably have to call the hotel number. HIE wins out here, with its tea and coffee-making facility.

However, I liked it and will use it again as an experiment in preference to the others .

Dear Ian,
thank you very much for your review of your stay and the detailed comments. We are happy to see that you werde satiesfied with our services. You have enjoyed your stay but unfortunately missed a telephone in the room. Motel One Hotels stand for a purist style. No gimmicks and clear lines. The value for money is second to none. A good bed, a healthy breakfast and a smile at the front desk - that is what our guests prefer. Today every traveller has its mobile phone with him. For emergency items we provide a telephone at the front desk.
We would be very pleased to welcome you in one of our hotels again and remain with best regards from Essen.

Really good basic hotel, comfortable, clean, spacious, free wifi (although wifi works better in the lobby), in the centre of Essen, few minutes from train and metro stations. I have stayed here many times and all the rooms seems similar in size, and I have only had queen size beds. and rather quiet too, despite being in centre of town. Breakfast is basic but good (yogurt, breads, croissants, cold meat, cheese, boiled egg, juice) enough.

Stayed for 3 nights during a business trip in October 2013.

Hotel is clean and tidy, staff are helpful and the location is good for Essen, being a five minute walk from the main train station.

Rooms are comfortable and bathroom/shower clean and functional. Breakfast available although €8 better spent at a cafe in my opinion.

Disappointed to find no tea and coffee in the room, otherwise for the price, I cannot complain.

After not being able to get a hotel in Dusseldorf for love nor money due to a fair we finished up staying out in Essen and first experience to use the Motel One chain.
Have to say was impressed and would certainly consider to use again for a short business or private trip. But would not consider it for a longer stay due to the room weaknesses you get with these boutique style hotels.
Firstly a clear positive is its location in the centre of Essen, a short walk from the main train station and ideally situated for a fair few bars and restaurants (fairly important as the hotel does not have its own restaurant).
Secondly it’s a fairly new build so is clean and modern. There’s obviously been some designer influence going on here, especially in the rooms with their clean styled designs.
Thirdly the pleasantness and helpfulness of the staff was high, especially the check-in staff. This was a good thing, because the check-in procedure is a bit lengthy as they take payment up front (something which is policy for the Motel One chain) and this obviously extends the check in procedure and can be annoying when you are waiting in line. Also this means that you cannot put extras in the bar on your room bill. But on the plus side this does mean you do not need to check out the following morning and can just leave.
The room is very modern and comfortable with a designer layout in both the room and the bathroom. And a great touch was having a real fire video playing on the central wall mounted flat screen tele as you enter. But then the downside is that you do not get much else. A small desk that would be just about big enough for a PC to sit on, no fridge and no wardrobe facilities to speak of, except for a couple of open shelves to the left of the bed, some hangers to the right and a second hanging rail on the wall in front of the bed. Fortunately only staying overnight enabled me to not have to unpack because the last thing I want to see when returning to my room is my uncontained underwear and then have to stare at my suit when in the bed. And I can’t think where the wife would have put her usual arsenal of hair and beauty tools that accompany us on weekend trips.
But the sleep quality was very good, and for an overnight solo business trip it was near on perfect.

Good situation, good service, nice decorated renewed rooms. Clean bathrooms with hairdryers. You can have more bath products on request at the reception. Nice "aquarium" screen when set up. Good value for money. Rooms are small but still a very good place for citytrips
