This is the second year we come here when we visit the Messe. It's about 10/15 minutes walking from the Messe. Nice and quietly located. Staff is very friendly and helpful The rooms are clean. Wifi is not too great, but free and working. The breakfast is delicious. All sorts of restaurants close by and a supermarket on the end of the street. We have already booked for next year.

We had a group, staying in three rooms. Out of those two had very nicely working internet, one didn't.

Rooms are cozy, service is good and breakfast is essential for survival in Essen Spiel. Often it's the only real food until late dinner, hence we truly appreciate the variety offered.

Room Tip: Back corner of 4th floor WIFI does not work.

A small, cosy hotel with easy walking distance from Essen fair center.
Their breakfast buffet is really good and helps you through hard days at the fair center.

However, place is not perfect. Some rooms are moist and have very little
air circulation (like room 36) and their internet is a joke. For two separate occasions,
two years apart, their internet is simply broken. During our 6 day stay, we had 12 hours at the beginning when internet worked at the checkin, but not at the rooms. During rest of the time it didn't work at all. We did complain, but comment is "internet is complementary service and might not work". So, if you're in Essen for business and actually NEED internet, this is not the place to be unless you have mobile internet by yourself.

I have to point out that we did check with the personnel their WLAN devices and general system. It could be described as horror story from late 90's. For reasons unknown the hotel has implemented web-based registration system that is poorly implemented and entirely broken. The WLAN basestations are cheapest crap that you can buy from supermarket and located, hanging from wires, on rack where the ethernet cabling resides.

To us, with four person team strictly on business trip with 10 devices to update information every evening this little hitch costed extra 50€/d. The hotel didn't want to compensate in any way and clearly they plan to continue with their broken internet in future as well.

Furthermore, it should be noted that after first time we clearly complained about the broken internet and it was promised to be fixed. We gave them two years. Nothing. And on our booking we very specifically said that we must have working internet, yet this didn't cause any actions what so ever on hotels side.

"You can use internet in the whole hotel per WiFi in free of charge. "
is the exact wording from their own website, but that is just a lie. Even when their crappy wlan login system works (rarely, it seems) wlan coverage is on some rooms and the lobby, only.

For the price they charge per night you ought to get what they advertise, no more, no less.
But, alas, that is not the case with Waldhaus. They don't want business customers, it seems.

Room Tip: 34 does not have any WLAN coverage. 36 doesn't have proper ventilation.

This small, comfortable and friendly hotel is ideally situated for visiting the nicer parts of Essen. It's a short walk from the shops and restaurants in Ruttenscheider Str., and short tram rides from Villa Hugel, Museum Folkwang and the city centre.

Our room was clean, the beds comfortable and the young ladies working there were charming and friendly. Breakfast choice was excellent.

Stayed here on a trip back from Poland and it was a lovely place to lay my head very clean room however on the small side.
When we checked in there was only 2 single beds pushed together to make a double which is fine however there was only one single quilt and one towel on making the lady aware she quickly got us another single quilt and another towel...we did ask for a double so we now spent the night sleeping with 2 single quilts...not a real problem I guess.
They don't serve food other than breakfast which at €15 per person is a pretty hefty cost if all you want it toast and a tea/coffee so we declined as there was a lovely bakery at the bottom of the road which will happily do you breakfast with 2 pots of coffee for €14.50 for both and everything is freshly baked/cooked well worth the trip.
A lovely little place to stop over however they do want to change a few prices as I mentioned €15 per person for Bfast and wanted €5.50 for a bottle of water...no thanks, the "hotel" is well placed at the top of a road full of shops, cafes and places to eat so you would not be spoilt for choice if you want to head out and to be fair you have to head out as there is nothing to eat at the place other than bfast.
I will say however that the lady that had recently stared was a diamond , full of advice and suggestions and certainly made what could have been a rather sterile stay more enjoyable...thank you :)
