“Viking River Cruise Basel to Amsterdam”
Reviewed 4 June 2014

My husband and I celebrated our anniversary with the Viking Rhine Getaway and an extension in Amsterdam. Viking did a fantastic job with air travel, organization, and excursions. The crew all spoke English, were very polite and helpful. The cabins were well equipped (bring an adapter for the outlets) and organized. Housekeeping serviced the cabin twice a day and did an incredible job. The food ranged from good to very good and the wait staff in the dining room was excellent. Included excursions were well planned and interesting. The optional excursions were fun and the groups were smaller. We had a great time and have since done the Danube River Cruise with Viking.

“Make time in Germany or northern France for the Rhine”
Reviewed 4 June 2014

Even if we hadn't been on a river cruise, having seen the sites along the Rhine, we would have wanted to take a boat ride at least, particularly along the middle Rhine where the castle and quaint villages come along every minute or so. There are swans on the Rhine, and it is still full of beauty.

We took the Viking River Rhine Getaway cruise from Amsterdam to Basel and absolutely loved it. The fantastic weather that came our way in May made it all the nicer. But if you just want to jump on a paddle wheeler for a day, at least do that. Get away from the cars and roads. You can actually picture what it was like during the Roman times and the middle ages.

“Rhine River Cruise on MS Olympia”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

The Cruise was with Newmarket Holidays Starting in Andernach down to Basel and back to Cologne, This was our first river cruise. I found it very interesting on the Rhine but a little repetetive much of the same except for the Rhine Gorge which was the best part.

The Trips from the boat were pretty good but we didnt do them all because we like to do our own thing on holiday, To do that was quite difficult on a river cruise because the Cruise ship sometimes departs from a different place to where she moors initially,

We really expected to be able to go into the towns and villages on route and sample the local culture but with the Itinerary being a little inflexible at times we were unable to do that.

The ship sailed sometimes at 5am in the morning and through the night sometimes which we found a problem ? for the fist few days we found that we were getting disturbed sleep and after about 4 days of this we were flagging to say the least.

The Staff -Crew -Captain and The Cruise manager were excellent could fault them. They bent over backwards to help in all areas. The food was quite good and a lot of it, could have done with a good walk at times before the next meal but you cant do that on a River Cruise.

We have to say we did enjoy the Cruise but its not the kind of holiday we would consider again at the moment , If you like to sit and look out of the window then its fine for you -But not us --!!!

The Company Newmarket I couldnt fault at all they did everything right -Airport -Transfers etc all very good no probs.

“Viking River Cruise - Rhine Getaway”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

My husband and I took the 'Rhine Getaway' cruise (from Amsterdam to Basel) from Viking River Cruises in late March / early April and loved it. We'd never been on a river cruise before and after our experience, we'd definitely like to take another.

For anyone who has been on the large ocean cruises, the ship is much smaller but we found it was all we needed. We got a verandah stateroom and were happy with that choice as liked to sit on the balcony as we cruised along. We purchased beer and wine while onshore and kept it in our room and enjoyed it while relaxing on the balcony. Although we didn't expect it, we were very lucky in that the weather was great on our trip (mid-20C) so we were able to take advantage not only of our balcony but also the upper deck. If you can afford the extra $'s, we definitely recommend getting a stateroom with a balcony.

Our stateroom had everything we needed - comfy bed, functional bathroom, fridge, tv with free movies, lots of closet space (and our large suitcases easily fit under the bed). The staterooms DO NOT have alarm clocks (although wake-up calls are available) so we used the alarm on our phone. Also, be aware that magnified make-up mirrors are not provided so be sure to bring your own if you need one. As warned on Viking's web site, the internet is not always available but was the majority of the time.

The meals were all very good - sometimes a bit slow but not a concern when you have free wine during meals :-). Be aware that during breakfast, you can order things other than what's available at the buffet (e.g. eggs benedict, pancakes, etc.). Seating during meals is not assigned so you get to meet lots of people on the cruise. And ... since there are very few guests on the cruise (<200), you do get to meet almost everyone by the end of the cruise. We're in our late 40's and were definitely on the younger side of the passengers (although there were a few younger than us) but it wasn't a problem at all.

We enjoyed all the tours and found that everything was very well organized (including airport pickup). The headsets used during the tours were great - helped us to hear the tour guides even if we weren't up close to them. And the tour guides were all great.

We did the post-cruise extension in Lucerne (along with the optional tour to Mount Titlis) and really enjoyed that. Looking back, it probably would have been good to do a pre-tour extension so that we had time to get over our jet lag before the cruise started.

A couple tips:
1) we heard from some other guests that Viking will allow you to select your own flights for a $50 fee (rather than just going with the flights that they pick for you). Having said that, though, we were happy with our flight times but did find that the KLM economy seats are VERY uncomfortable (not a problem with Viking but if flying KLM you may want to consider upgrading).
2) be prepared to sign up for optional tours early in the cruise (believe it was on the first night). So probably a good idea to read up on them before you leave on your cruise.

All in all, we had a wonderful time and would highly recommend this cruise / company!

“Awesome”
Reviewed 26 May 2014

After taking a drive eventually through some wonderful countryside we arrived at a quaint restaurant to await the boarding of the boat that was taking us up and fortunately back down the river.
There is limited food and drink on board but we were not there to eat or drink, the views are there for the taking - old castles - vineyards - simply lovely forest with a pile of old history, thoroughly enjoyable.
Listen for the music as you turn the Lorelei rock, enchanting.
