Overall, Saks Urban Design Hotel turned out to be a good choice for me. There are small annoyances to be aware of but many more plusses than minuses. First, the small annoyances - no towel rack, no wash rag (usual for a European hotel I've found), very few wall plug-ins, no hair dryer, no iron / ironing board (and, once again these last two items are usual in Europe). The elevator was a little challenging at times - turns out you have to hold your room card flat on the reader as you press the floor selection button. All other points in the hotel require a simple quick scan to get the "click". The last annoying thing is the access to the parking garage; if you're coming towards the hotel and need to turn right off of B37 you will have to go around the block and turn around to approach from the other end so you can turn left to enter the garage.
Plusses - well, the parking garage - very convenient, spacious parking spots, and a flat rate for your stay rather than pay as you go which can be very pricey around here. The internet (wi-fi) was excellent, no problems with signal strength or access at all. The staff was very helpful and made sure to ask at check-in whether or not I needed it. Other plusses include the bed - very comfortable; the shower - big, good water pressure and an abundance of warm water; the TV choices - more than 1 English-language channel! Finally, room service was excellent last night and this afternoon I had the chance to check out the guest lounge on the floor and found that free coffee and water is available 24 hours.
Final comments - the hallways are dark and the room decor is brownish so if you want something more colorful you need to go somewhere else. that said, the rooms are very well lighted and relatively spacious. The hotel is located in a central location within walking distance of the downtown attractions. This hotel is a good choice for a short stay in the Kaiserslautern area - I recommend it.

Room Tip: I asked for a centrally located room for better wi-fi access because I read a tip on that. Good tip!

Although the hotel is priced correctly to attract customers its design appears to overtake the finer sides of a flawless stay.
The modern, contemporary rooms are very confortable but we encountered two problems; first, the white bed sheet had a large stain on it. Surely, the 4* cleaning staff would have noticed this when preparing the room - it was there in plain view to greet us after a long drive. Second, the toilet has no air conditioning. Call me old fashoined but this is a must! As the bedroom could be controlled its a shame this feature was overlooked.
However, the location is excellent, smack, bang on the central square in town with the Alstadt just over the road and numerous decent restaurants and bars in the immediate viscinity.
A nice feature is the use of a lounge on the first floor where all guests can get a coffee/ tea of their choice, coissant, jam, bottles of mineral water, etc, free and at anytime of the day.
In all a good and enjoyable stay.

SAKS has a great location right in the town center of Kaiserslautern. You can walk to all the restaurants and businesses. There a parking garage under the hotel for a fee but it makes parking extremely easy.

Rooms are modern and comfortable. Rooms were clean and large. Great bathroom and shower.

Hotel has a good restaurant for all meals. Breakfast was not complimentary but was worth the charge.

Great high speed Internet.

Excellent change of pace compared to the other local hotels in the area.

Room Tip: Ask for room facing the town square or it could be noisy.

My wife and I stayed here for a wekk while I was in town for business. We stayed in a suite and had a ton of room. The restaraunt in the lobby was pretty nice, they have a room with really nice pretzels and coffee during the day. Also lots of gummy bears at the check in counter. the location is really good and is near the pedestrian zone in kaiserslautern. The staff was very helpful and professional although the early morning guy on the desk seemed grumpy sometimes. The hotel has a very modern look and feel to it. i would definitely stay here again.

I was traveling to Kaiserslautern on business and decided to bring my wife and 4 year old son with me. I consulted a colleague about hotels in the local area and he suggested SAKS as it was relatively new and quite modern compared to others in surrounding area and was also close to where I would be holding meetings.

My wife did some research on the place to see if it was kid friendly which was a first priority for us, she decided that with the location right in the heart of town it would be good for them during the day while I was working, Turns out she was right, there is a small park directly across from the hotel and she made short trips to the zoo and a local area aquarium that had lots of interesting marine creature our son really enjoyed. The zoo was a 15 min drive from the hotel and the aquarium about the same. The main town square is right outside the doors of the property and lead into all the shopping district with the usual European pedways, there were small rides for the little ones as well.

The hotel itself is very modern in design and has a retro feel to it. We stayed in a junior suite which had a king bed and had our son sleep with us instead of having a cot, the bed was a little soft for our liking but not the worst we have ever come across or slept in, plenty of pillows and a flat screen TV that swivels from the bed area around to face the couch on the other side of the half wall. No fridges in the room, lighting is good, the shower/toilet area is a bit of a strange set-up, with a curtain diving it from the bed area and the toilet in almost a closet but has a window in it?? We found this to be odd. The room has carpeting throughout, there is a safe and toiletries available and the staff are very friendly and spoke great English.

The restaurant is quite good but no children's menu, our son had a burger the first night which was massive for him, and pizza the second night which was to much for him again, the food was excellent and the service great, no English menus but the servers were very helpful with translation. The breakfast was very good as well with a buffet style of typical European fare, the restaurant is right next to the main square and has floor to ceiling windows which open up depending on weather which is really nice and had lots of sunshine in the early afternoon, the only knock here is the limited room service menu, but we were happy to eat in the on site dining room.

Parking is on site and the hotel is easy to find in the heart of the downtown area by GPS. Lots of shopping for the ladies close at hand and my wife raved about this as a weekend trip for the girls to do some shopping so we may return sooner rather than later. Maybe even check out some more of the local food establishments. Lots of patio bars and cafes very close by as well as banks and gas stations.

Power in the room shuts down at 11pm so it gets a bit stuffy in the middle of the night, but if your room is on the square you can crack the window with little noise effect. We found the room to be comfortable, but you can hear a lot of noise in the hall doors slamming and sliding glass doors to the shower next door and above, minor at most. All in all we thoroughly enjoyed our 2 day getaway. We would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the square.

This was a great Modern European hotel. Rooms were large for Europe standards. In-room amenities were great. Staff was extremely friendly and very helpful. I enjoyed my stay and will return the next time.
