Just perfect! Absolutely perfect! Normally I stay with relatives when in Koblenz, but with medical woes and other problems, they booked me into the congenial Schwarzen Bären. Herr and Frau Kölsch are consummate hosts, and after I struggled with my bad German, their command of English was most appreciated, as was their tolerance as I mangled their language! Of the several hotels and breakfast buffets I enjoyed on this trip, the Schwarzen Bären's was the best value for my money. The room was spacious, overlooked the garden and dining patio, and in the distance, the bluffs across the Mosel. The bathroom was large, and the shower had plenty of hot water that seemed to arrive almost instantaneously despite being on the second floor (or third floor, for my fellow Americans). The hotel was spotlessly clean. The river promenade was a five-minute walk away, and a nice after-dinner walk to the Güls Bridge took perhaps half an hour roundtrip. The 6/16 bus stops in front of the St. Laurentius Church just down the street and goes right into the Löhr Center (for shopping) and Zentralplatz (for the Altstadt and more shopping at the new Forum shopping mall). About a five-minute walk up Koblenzerstraße is Restaurant Chianti, which I have been loving for years. It's run by a congenial Liverpudlian named Susan, so feel free to speak English! The zum Schwarzen Bären's breakfast buffet is wide and varied, and is that marvelous German mixture of sweet and savory, with plenty of jams, soft-boiled eggs, würsts, cheese, yoghurt, müsli, brötschen and the rest of the works. Thanks to the worthless engineers' union, German Rail had another strike the day I reluctantly left and Frau Kölsch even offered to prepare sandwiches for my taxi trip to Frankfurt Airport! Now with hospitality like that, you know you're in good hands!

Room tip: Koblenzerstraße is quite busy. Ask for a room on the river side.

We stayed there for a couple of nights towards the end of June 2014 (yes quite recent!) and our first impression was "wow, this hotels feels very German!" (whatever that means). We used to study and live in Germany for 4-5 years so know quite a bit about Germany and this hotel basically represents everything you could ask for about stereotypical German accommodations. Lots of wooden panels and carvings around the hotel interior, which gives you quite a nice feeling about it, a kneipe (pub), a biergarten, a wine room, and a nice traditional looking German restaurant. The food is great - you should try the schnitzel with mushroom sauce menu and combine it with the dry white wine from the local vineyard, we have a winner! Oh, the hotel has its own parking space too and it's free, which is amazing, because at other hotels you kinda have to pay extra for car parks.

The owners were really helpful and accommodating. We are a small family with a 22-month old baby so baby-friendliness is quite a big deal for us and the owners of the hotel were basically very helpful and considerate about our little one, making sure that she's fed properly and even gave her some free bottle of warm milk for her before she goes to bed every night, which was very nice of them. Basically, it's a good hotel for family.

The only thing that could be improved, if I were to be a bit pedantic and demanding, was the bathroom in that the furniture, the lighting and the lay-out of the bathroom is a bit dated and could definitely be upgraded. But I guess it's within the theme of the hotel, being traditional and all that.

When you are eating in the hotel restaurant, you should definitely give either the trocken (dry) or halbtrocken (half-dry?) white wine from the local vineyard. It's very nice and we bought a couple of bottles to bring back home to the UK.

In a nutshell, a great hotel!!

Traveling from USA, we stayed a couple of nights in this hotel last June during our two week vacation. They also have an onsite restaurant where we had dinner. We had fresh Spargel. It was FANTASTIC!!!!

The breakfast was also very good and the internet was faster than most if not all other hotels we stayed at. If I recall right, it was 10 Mbps.

This is a family owned hotel. They are very accommodating and nice. They were eager to help with bags, language, and even demonstrated some unique features on the car we were driving. We weren't having trouble with the car. They were just friendly enough to show us as a matter of interest. It was like visiting close friends.

We were driving through Koblenz again while traveling from Paris to Hannover and stayed there again on our way (during the same vacation). And again,we felt very welcome.

In both cases the room was clean and comfortable.

If you want a nice clean hotel with personalized service, I recommend considering this hotel.

This hotel and it's owners were fantastic. Nothing was too much for them they looked after us very well. We ate in the hotel on our second night and the food was very good. Thank you. We arrived without a booking but they found us a room. The hotel is very traditional with lots of wooden panelling and carvings. It is situated out of the main town but there is a bus stop right opposite the hotel which got us both in and out for under 6 euros. We were given all of the bus times by the lady of the house, who also gave us directions of where to go. They also have their own off street car park which was perfect for us as we were travelling with a lot of very expensive electrical equipment. Overall a typically authentic German experience - lovely.
