“Wonderful local find, fresh creative food”
Reviewed 14 October 2013

In general, I found German food a little uninspiring and heavy. But this place had very good local food, including a beautiful fig salad when I visited late August. Staff were helpful, recommended wonderful wine, as I'm not familiar with German varietals, and spoke perfect English to account for my utter lack of Deutsche! My favorite meal in Germany, particularly as we were able to sit outside. The inside looked nice, but perhaps a bit dark.

“Mostly a wine bar”
Reviewed 18 September 2013

Had dinner there while on a business trip in Mainz. Was leasantly surprised by how nice the old city was. Dropped in on this restaurant as it had favorable reviews. While it has nice outdoor seating, all tables were occupied by groups of friends and families, when asked if there was available outdoor seating, the waiter proposed I sit with one of the groups as this is "how it works here". Give my German is rusty and the place was busy with what I perceived to be mostly locals, I elected to eat indoors. The wine list is front and center and you can sample many . The prices are quite reasonable. The food was hit and miss. The appetizer (figs and goat cheese ) was a god mix of sweet and salty and the figs were fresh (a frequent issue) but the pork was overcooked and the sauce tasted like it was just mushroom soup thickened with starch. Overall the meal was a disapointment, I did not bother with deserts. I must admit the price was quite reasonable for Europe though. I would recommend this place for adrink or fi you were into wine tasting as this seems to be their real specialty.

“Great local food”
Reviewed 13 July 2013

This a tiny place, filled with locals, on a small street just outside the tourist area. The food was excellent - based on local produce, well cooked and not too salty. Everyone was very friendly and the staff spoke some English.

“My favorite in Mainz!”
Reviewed 24 May 2012

Every time I am in Mainz, I try to stop by Zum Beichtstuhl, it is definitely my favorite place in Mainz, could it be for dinner or just for chilling with a glass of wine. It is a small restaurant in a small street in the old town, but once you find it, you know why it is hidden. The food couldn't be more local, I have hardly been disappointed, and their wine selection is as good as the advice you get from the owner: excellent. When I happened to be alone, I would definitely go there: the atmosphere is really special with the wooden walls, the host tables, where you are invited to sit with other guests, and the owners always have some nice words to make you feel comfortable. It's the kind of place you keep coming back to like a another home.

“Small, traditional, personal service and English speaking”
Reviewed 18 January 2012

I am personal friends with the owners, who have friendly, English speaking staff. The menu is local and traditional, with very large servings and excellent value for money. Bookings are strongly advised as the restaurant is busy every night. Great wine list, and some favourite dishes include the smoked salmon salad, pork fillets with panfried potatoes, pumpkin soup, local handmade soft cheese with paprika and pretzels. The cosy downstairs room has 17th century dark timber panelling from a confessional in a local church, candles on long shared tables, bench seating and soft lighting. Upstairs the ambience is lighter and roomier, with more floor space and smaller tables for 2 or 4 people. In summer there are a few tables outside in a quiet local cobbled laneway. You might need to squeeze into your seat, but it makes for a convivial dining experience, and people often chat to each other from table to table. Highly recommended.
