If you are interested in manuscripts, printing technologies and communication of ideas, this is an important stop
Yes, signage is German, although most have some English translation. An iPod with several short audio tours is available for rental (additional €3,50). I know there were guided tours in German and French, so English tours are a possibility.
Seeing the development from scribal manuscripts to woodblock engravings to movable type to typesetting machines gives one pause as to the value of the written word well presented
The gallery dealing with the development of movable type In the Orient (China, Japan, Korea) was fascinating, and one wonders how publishing was originally accomplished, what with the multitude of ideographic characters comprising the languages.
All in all, a great use of 2-3 hours of your time in Mainz.

“Great museum -- needs to be friendlier to visitors”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 April 2014

The museum was fabulous -- tremendous exhibits and history of printing and printing technology. Museum easy to find and navigate. Only downside was the abruptness of the staff -- we didn't see any signs in English or German that told people not to take photos inside the museum. On the first station, we took a non-flash photo with our iPhone, and from out of nowhere this man appeared and yelled at us that there was no photos allowed. One other staff member confronted my wife for having her feet up on an Ottoman.

Nonetheless, this was a great museum -- well worth the entry fee and the Gutenberg Bibles on display were amazingly preserved and inspiring to behold.

“You can learn a lot.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 March 2014

It is a very interesting museum . Historically Mainz is all about the breakthrough invention of Gutenberg and his first edition of the Bible so skipping the visit to this museum would seem like ignoring this important milestone in the cultural history and settling down for just partial superficial experience of the city. There is a lot of exhibits on history of printing . At times there are life presentations and lectures. We sat through one in German and in spite of the significant language barrier we were able to enjoy it. One can see two copies of Gutenberg's Bible during the visit.

Within walking distance from the Hilton Mainz City. They have a nice gift shop for post cards and other keepsake items.

“Gutenberg bible”

The chance to see one of the famed Guttenberg bibles was the highlight of the visit. Other than that it seems odd to be writing today on an ipad about a printing museum. Time changes everything.
